Arizona Fall League

It's that time of year again. For roughly the next month, some of the top prospects from all 30 Major League teams will duke it out in the Arizona Fall League. Success out in the desert can be a sign of very-near MLB readiness.

The Astros have sent position players A.J. Reed, J.D. Davis, Derek Fisher, Chan Moon, and pitchers Keegan Yuhl, Brian Holmes, Chris Cotton, and Albert Minnis, to the Glendale Desert Dogs (Astros, White Sox, Phillies, Dodgers, and Pirates).

October 13 - Glendale wins 8-7 over Mesa

-> J.D. Davis: 1-for-4, solo HR
-> Derek Fisher: 0-for-2, 2 BB
-> A.J. Reed: 0-for-3, R, 2 BB

SP Brian Holmes: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 BB, 0 K
RP Keegan Yuhl: 0.2 IP, 3 ER, 2 H, 2 BB, 0 K

October 14 - Glendale wins 7-6 over Mesa

-> Chan Moon: 0-for-4, 2 RBI

RP Chris Cotton: 1.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 2 K
RP Albert Minnis: 1.2 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 BB, 3 K (blown save, win)

October 15 - Glendale loses 9-2 to Scottsdale

-> Derek Fisher: 1-for-3, BB, 2B, RBI
-> A.J. Reed: 0-for-3, BB, R
-> J.D. Davis: 0-for-3, BB

October 16 - Rained Out

Says it's postponed, rather than cancelled, but we'll see about that.

October 17 - Bowman Hitting Challenge

No games today, instead it's the AFL's version of the home run derby. One prospect from each MLB team takes part. A.J. Reed was the Astros' representative, and he took third place overall (and first place among American League prospects). Read more about it here.

South of the Border

Information isn't always as complete with these guys, but we do what we can. This week I'll just be listing who is where so far, as these leagues are just getting started and don't always have game-by-game scoring information.

One guy who already has done something noteworthy, though, is James Hoyt. He's pitched in four games for his club already and is serving as their closer. He's 3-for-3 in save opportunities, hasn't allowed a run, and has five strike outs against just one walk so far.
