That fancy Astros database that houses all the team's information got breached.
Now, 10 months worth of trade discussions are out in the open for all to see. Deadspin has the news, found from a site called Anonbin, where individuals can dump data they obtain.
The biggies? As Deadspin points out, it's probably the Giancarlo Stanton rumor:
The Miami Marlins seem to have been willing to trade Giancarlo Stanton for prospects Carlos Correa and George Springer. Granting that Correa is an absolute stud, that Springer has hit fabulously well since his callup earlier this year, and that they're under team control for years while Stanton is starting to get expensive, you still wonder if the Astros will end up kicking themselves over that one. Stanton has the 11th-highest isolated power in major league history for anyone with at least 1,000 at-bats, and is a Gold Glove-caliber outfielder as well; he's a generational talent, the kind you can't really overpay for. (Another way to look at this, of course, is that the embarrassing Marlins franchise was yet again willing to trade away an irreplaceable player so as to pocket some of its dole money.)
A week after one of the more secretive front offices allowed a reporter into its inner sanctum for a Sports Illustrated feature, we get this. All that dirty laundry aired out for the public. Turns out, much of the Astros internal chatter reads like a TCB staff email thread.
I'm not encouraged by that.
I'm a little sad that Ichiro didn't make his way to Houston, but sweet lord, there's a lot more here.
Deadspin took the time to break down all the comments into easy-to-read chunks and organized it chronologically. But, geez. There's a lot to do here.
Below, we'll post some more of the snippets, both from Deadspin and from the Anonbin dump. But, let's take a moment to reflect on what this means. Pages and pages of internal documents from the Astros just went public. It not only reveals the Astros intent, but also what other teams are doing.
Do you think that Toronto was happy that their goals from last winter are now public? Or that all these prospects the Pirates discussed now know they were discussed? I'm sure this will lead to some awkward conversations between David Stearns, Jeff Luhnow and the rest of the league.
Will this affect how the Astros deal with teams this deadline? Will anyone want to talk to them?
That's probably extreme, but there's no way around this. These leaks are incredibly embarrassing for the Astros front office.
Here's a sample of some of the text via Deadspin from the winter:
COL said they wouldn't do Harrell alone but asked if we would add. When [Luhnow] began to press they backed off on Harrell and didn't seem to have real interest. COL said they have multiple offers for Fowler. JL asked if they would be interested in any of our other pitchers.
[Luhnow] spoke with [Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik]. Jazk Z said he's getting a lot of calls from Clubs asking him if he can get Castro from us. Jack Z asked if we would do Ackley for Castro. JL said no, we wouldn't do that. Jack Z asked if there was someone he could add to Ackley. JL said he would take a look.
COL offered Fowler and Ortega for Cosart and Barnes
Here's just a sample of what Ground Control Bud Norris produced from Anonbin:
