MILB POTW April 28-May 2

This week we picked a young pitcher setting personal bests and a hitter knocking the cover off of the ball right now in A-.

Bob Levey

Pitcher of the Week

This week Lance McCullers gave us a very promising look at his future in a 5-3 win against High Desert.

Over 5 innings McCullers struck out a career high 10 batters and allowed only four base runners. Those numbers brought his strikeout total for the season to 33, and dropped his ERA to 2.51 (7th in A+ ERA rankings).

While it's supposed to be pitcher of the week, I can't help but notice from Anthony Boyer's report that Kyle Smith collected 7 strikeouts in the same game. So let's give an honorable mention to McCullers's tandem buddy. And we have got to come up with a better name than "tandem buddy."

Hitter of the Week

While I really initially wanted to give the nod to Ronald Torreyes for his performance at getting on base recently against good pitching, I just can't deny Brian Holberton the honor.

In his last 4 starts the catcher in Quad Cities has been on a tear, hitting 8-15 with a homer and 3 doubles. The homer and two doubles came last night against Clinton, a game in which he went 3-3 with a double and a home run. And this is all part of a solid 9 game hitting streak.

I'm looking forward to seeing him perform against pitching in the next levels. if he keeps this up, it'll be interesting to see how quickly that happens.
