Astros Minor League Recap: Minors are Back Baby!

The Astros Minor League Recaps are BAAAAACCCCKKKKKKK

Kevin C. Cox

The minor leagues split for the night on Opening Day. There's two ways of looking at it.

1. On Opening Day, the Astros are 3-2 with Houston, OkC, and Lancaster winning while CC, and QC lost.

or

2. The Astros were 2-3 last night with the difference being that Houston lost last night.

I personally prefer option one due to optimism, but apparently we can't talk about hope here (elbow jab to Astros County).

Either way, minor league baseball is back!

  • Hooks lose 5-4 in Extras to Spoil Opening Day

A little bit of a back and forth game goes the wrong way late. Reliever Alex Sogard allowed two base runners in the 11th inning and gave way to the shut down JetHawks closer from last year in Travis Ballew. However, Ballew allowed both inherited runners to score to lose.

Lancaster All-Stars lead the way in 8-2 Win

Baseball America announced this team as the best minor league team in all of baseball due to its talent loaded roster. That talent came out and supported that claim and was headed up by none other than FUTURE #1 OVERALL PROSPECT, CARLOS CORREA. (Hype Machine). Correa batted in the three hole and drove in 4 RBI. It kind of helps to have a guy like Anthony Kemp batting two spots ahead of you. But, Vincent Velasquez also put on a show with seven strikeouts in four innings, showing why he created some buzz last year and over the off-season.

    • Vincent Velasquez-4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO, 1/0 GO/AO
    • Mitchell Lambson-1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO
    • Kyle Westwood-4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 3/6 GO/AO
    • Anthony Kemp 2B-2-4, 2B, 2 BB
    • Teoscar Hernandez CF-1-4, 3B, SO
    • Carlos Correa SS-3-4, 4 RBI
    • Rio Ruiz 3B-1-3, BB
    • Danry Vasquez RF-2-4

River Bandits Fall Behind Early and Lose 8-4

Opening day was not kind to Andrew Thurman as he was quite hittable and let his team fall behind very early. They battled back within one run but Kane County added more runs later to just put it out of reach.

    • Andrew Thurman-4 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 3/3 GO/AO
    • Zach Morton-1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 2/0 GO/AO
    • Chris Lee-2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO, 3/1 GO/AO-Wow, 4 Walks.
    • Tyler Brunnemann-2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 1/3 GO/AO
    • James Ramsay CF-3-5, 2B
    • Brett Phillips RF-2-5, SB
    • Tyler White 3B-0-5, 3 SO
    • Conrad Gregor 1B-0-3, 2 BB, 1 SO
    • Chase McDonald DH-1-4, 2B, BB, 2 SO
    • Austin Elkins 2B-2-4, 3B, SB
    • Jobduan Morales C-0-4, 3 SO
