Weekly College Prospect Update: 3/21-3/23

New, 37 comments

Many of the country's top college pitchers struggled this weekend. Meanwhile, the NHSI is here, and Dylan Cease is not.

USA TODAY Sports

The National High School Invitational (NHSI) starts today, and one of the tournament's biggest names - Dylan Cease - will not pitch. Cease, a preseason All-American righthander out of Dexter Fowler's alma mater, Milton (Ga.) High School - left his March 3 start in the fifth inning with elbow soreness, and has not pitched since. Cease currently sits tenth on Keith Law's most recent Top 50 Draft Prospects list. He also underwent an MRI on Friday.

This is becoming a trend at the NHSI - in 2013, Jordan Sheffield had to bow out of the contest, eventually having Tommy John surgery; in 2012, it was Lucas Giolito with elbow soreness.

Meanwhile, some huge names will be at the tournament, headlined by names like Michael Gettys, Jacob Gatewood, Touki Toussaint, and Josh Morgan.

In the college ranks, University of Hartford lefty Sean Newcomb is grabbing a lot of headlines. Eight shutout innings against Binghamton brings him to 32.2 on the season, without allowing a single earned run. At 6'5", 240 pounds, and a fastball in the mid-nineties, Newcomb has struck out 10.5 batters per nine innings on the season, walking 4.1 per nine. Amazingly, he's at just 2-1 on the season, which tells you pretty much all you need to know about pitcher wins and losses. Opposing batters are batting just .133 on the season against him, and he's allowed just one extra-base hit - a double.
