BBWAA, Houston Chapter announces its annual awards

Jason Castro was named Astros MVP in a unanimous vote in the BBWAA, Houston Chapter annual awards.

Here's a release from the Houston chapter of the Baseball Writer's Association of America. I was really only surprised by the voting for Pitcher of the Year. To me, Brett Oberholtzer didn't have nearly enough innings to be considered for that spot. But, what do I know? Must've also been a good race between Matt Carpenter and The Woodlands HS graduate Paul Goldschmidt for Houston Area Player of the Year. As usual, home runs trump doubles and defense.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the awards? Surprised by any of them? Pretty much what you thought when I revealed my voting the other day?

HOUSTON - Catcher Jason Castro has been selected the Houston Astros Most Valuable Player in an unanimous vote by the Houston Chapter of Baseball Writers Association of America.
The former Stanford star was picked 10th overall in the 2008, and made his Astros big league debut in 2010, appearing in 67 games.
Castro, 26, was hitting .276 with 18 home runs and 56 RBI when he went on the disabled list Sept. 13 after having a cyst removed from his knee. His 2013 on base percentage was .350 with a slugging average of .485.
Others named in the annual writers' poll are Brett Oberholtzer, Pitcher of the Year; Jarred Cosart, Rookie of the Year;
Carlos Corporan, Darryl Kile Award winner; and Paul Goldschmidt, Arizona Diamondback first baseman, Houston Area Major League Player of the Year.
Oberholtzer, 24, who pitched Friday night against the New York Yankees, finished his rookie season with a 4-5 record and an ERA of 2.76 over 73 innings. He struck out 45, allowed seven homer runs and 13 walks.
Cosart, 23, was 1-1 entering the final weekend with an ERA of 1.95 over 60 innings.
Corporan's Kile Award is also called the "good guy award," in memory of the late Darryl Kile, a former Astro and St. Louis Cardinal. It is presented to the player chosen most affable with teammates, fans and the press.
Goldschmidt played high school baseball at The Woodlands and has been with the Diamondbacks two-plus seasons. Going into Sunday's finale he is batting .303 with 36 home runs, 124 RBI, a .403 on base average and a slugging average of .557.
Steve Perry, who has been with the Astros 34 seasons and 24 as visiting clubhouse manager, is the 2013 recipient of the Fred Hartman Long and Meritorious Service to Baseball Award. This award is in memory of the late Baytown newspaper man who covered the Astros from their infancy in 1962 until his death in 1991.
Perry joined the Astros as a batboy in 1979, but by mid-season was promoted to an assistant in the visiting clubhouse. He was named visiting clubhouse manager in 1989. He and his wife, Jessica, and two daughters, Nicole and
Amanda, lived in Houston.
Bill Hartman of the Fort Bend Herald was re-elected chairman of the Houston BBWAA chapter.
