It was a draining season for the Astros in 2013, and now the team will enter the 2014 campaign riding on a 15-game losing streak.
Erik Bedard gave one of his best performances of the year as he auditions for a possible job somewhere in 2014 as he went seven shutout innings while allowing only three hits.
Jonathan Villar doubled to start the bottom of the first for Houston and two batters later Matt Dominguez singled him home. The game would last 13 more innings and the Astros would only get a single from Carlos Corporan and J.D. Martinez. Corporan's single came in the second inning.
It seemed unlikely that the Astros would reach the all-time team single-season strikeout record by the 2010 Arizona Diamondbacks. But the 19 punchouts against seven different Yankees pitchers got them the record. The team actually had the record when they struck out for the 14th time going in the bottom of the ninth.
The Yankees tied the game in the eighth when Curtis Granderson singled home Eduardo Nunez. The run was charged to Josh Zeid who allowed Nunez to reach on a double. The blown save went to Kevin Chapman, who allowed the Grandy Man single. It was the third BS of the year for Chapman.
Lucas Harrell went four scoreless innings before allowing the Yankees to score four times in the top of the 14th. At least he didn't walk anybody.
The Astros finish 51-111. Up is almost certainly the only direction to go.
