Astros trade rumors: Tuesday market updates

Updating the market with a little over a day to go to the July 31 trade deadline.

There's about 29 hours left until the trade deadline, so teams are getting ready to make deals. Here's what's happened since the last time we updated you on the trade market.

Lefty relievers

Well, it turns out lefty relievers may be the market's hottest commodity right now, which means Wesley Wright might get moved after all.

The Giants are ready to deal Javier Lopez to that end.

Oh, and Josh Outman of the Rockies is also apparently a hot commodity on the lefty reliever market.

No Peavy

In a sure sign that a trade is probably, the White Sox are holding Jake Peavy out of his scheduled start tonight. Literally hours ago, though, the consensus was that Chicago would not be moving Peavy. Wonder what kind of Godfather offer came in overnight.

Cleveland GM Q&A

The Indians GM Chris Antonetti talked to MLB.com about a myriad of topics leading up to the trade deadline. For our purposes, though, the most interesting one revisited a topic we talked about last week: moving the trade deadline back to August.

Question: Does the Aug. 31 waiver trading deadline represent a bigger opportunity now (to give teams a longer chance to discern where they stand and perhaps decide to trade players)?

CA: I do think it offers an opportunity, and maybe a better opportunity for teams to acquire players. Because at that point, teams begin to separate themselves a little bit more. There will be additional opportunities in August to find ways to improve.

Red Sox should go after Cliff Lee?

Ken Rosenthal has a polarizing column up at FoxSports, arguing that the Red Sox should trade their best prospect, shortstop Xander Boegerts for Phillies pitcher Cliff Lee.

Of course such a trade would be painful for Boston; Bogaerts, 20, indeed looks like the real thing. The Sox, in fact, regard him perhaps even more highly than they did Ramirez in Nov. 2005. Ramirez, even in his youth, sparked makeup questions. Bogaerts, a native of Aruba, speaks four languages, "lights up a room," according to Farrell.

The kid is wonderful. The kids are always wonderful. But winning a World Series is wonderful, too - yes, even more wonderful than rising to the top of Baseball America's organizational talent rankings.

The Sox won't do it. They should.

Hanley Ramirez for Josh Beckett. Xander Bogaerts for Cliff Lee.

It's the kind of trade that just doesn't happen any more, but apparently Boston has been actively talking to Philadelphia, so it's at least semi-likely. A huge deal centered around Cliff Lee? Maybe Boston is desperate enough after slipping further behind Tampa Bay last night.

Rays deal for Jesse Crain

Remember when we talked about Houston hitting the relief market before other names went down? I would not have dreamed Jose Veras would potentially fetch more in return than Jesse Crain. But, that appears to be exactly what happened.

Tampa Bay traded "future considerations" to the White Sox for the injured reliever. Crain's health is what makes him such a question mark, but he's clearly one of the best relievers on the trade market. What's interesting is that "future considerations" could mean two prospects and it could just mean cash. It all depends on how Crain performs down the stretch.
