Vasquez is batting .281 with .333 on-base percentage and .390 slugging for Low-A West Michigan. As Jordan Garosh wrote earlier this month, Vasquez has the potential to be an above-average player in the outfield, but he has a lot of work to do to reach that point.

This seems like a trade that will pay off immediately for the Tigers. They needed to improve upon the performances of right-handers Al Alburquerque and Bruce Rondon. The possibility remains that it pays off well for the Astros down the line as well.

The Tigers had scouted Vasquez in Venezuela since he was 14, so they felt comfortable signing him for $1.2 million when he turned 16 in 2010. A tall, lean, lefthanded batter, he shows excellent control of the barrel, which is evident in his low strikeout rate (13 percent of plate appearances) and .281 average this season at West Michigan. Vasquez doesn't hit for much power at this stage, and he may need to add mass to his frame and loft to his line-drive swing to meet the home run standard required for everyday work in left field. He grades out as below-average in the speed, range and arm strength departments, so his future rides entirely on the development of his bat.

I think the trade makes sense for both Houston and Detroit. Veras has had a good season, but he's 32 years old and won't be part of the next good Astros team. Vasquez isn't a spectacular prospect at his point, but he has some positive markers in his profile and is very young. The Tigers are in win-now mode, so cashing him in for immediate relief help is logical. Their farm system is relatively thin, and Vasquez was one of their key assets.

Obviously, this weakens an already-weak bullpen, but...the Astros are adding another valuable piece, just at the Low-A level. Here's hoping the Astros slide Jose Cisnero into the 9th inning or, you know, sign Brian Wilson.

But let's put it this way: In 2010 the Tigers signed Vasquez as an international free agent to a $1.2m signing bonus. The Astros signed Veras to a $1.85m contract for 2013, of which they have paid him approximately $1.19m. So the Astros basically swapped a 32-year old reliever for one of the Tigers' top prospects. It may be 2016 before we see him, but this is exactly why you sign guys like Jose Veras.

Danry Vasquez played three games this season against the Astros' Low A affiliate earlier this season. Vasquez, who Houston acquired today in a trade, was playing for the Tigers' Low A affiliate, WestMichigan. Vasquez was 5 for 14 with a triple in the three contests against his future organization.

Vasquez "adds to an already formidable group of prospects at the A ball level," Astros GM Jeff Luhnow said in a statement. The 19-year-old left fielder was hitting .281/.333/.390 in his second stint for the Tigers' Low-A club. Prior to the season, Baseball America ranked Vasquez sixth among Tigers prospects, noting that the offensive-minded Venezuelan "projects as a solid hitter with plus power potential." Baseball America's Matt Eddy has more on Vasquez. The Veras trade is Luhnow's second this month, as he acquired Ronald Torreyes from the Cubs for international bonus pool money. "There's nothing else close at this point," McTaggart quotes Luhnow as saying this morning. Starter Bud Norris is thought to be the Astros' other major trade chip this month.

The Astros and Tigers haven't hooked up for a trade in over a decade. Back in June 2001, Tigers GM Randy Smith sent Dave Mlicki to Houston, with Astros GM Gerry Hunsicker acquiring Jose Lima.
