Houston Astros Minor League Recap: 6/20/13

Greeneville gets their season underway and the Astros minors go 4-3.

Hey Now, You're An All-Star

The Triple-A All-Star game is less than a month away, and as it stands right now, no RedHawks look like possibilities to be starters. There's less than a week left to vote, so make sure you head over and make your voice known.

Travel My Way, It's the Highway That's the Best

The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office is sponsoring the Road To The Show (see what they did there?), where one lucky winner will receive four tickets to the August 18 Astros-Rangers game, airfare, and a one night stay in a luxury hotel. For any of you who live in the area, you may want to drop by and enter.

One Step Closer

Three Astros draftees will be playing in the semi-finals of the College World Series, as Brian Holberton helped North Carolina knock off NC State, 7-0; and Jake Rodriguez's Oregon State ended Indiana's Cinderella season, 1-0.

Rodriguez was 0-for-3 in his game on Wednesday night. He had 2 strikeouts... but he also drove in the game's only run on a sacrifice fly. Oregon State will take on Mississippi State today.

Kent Emanuel had the night off for the TarHeels, but Astros prospect watchers still had Holberton, who once again played catcher and went 0-for-4 with a run, a walk, and a strikeout. He scored his run - on a Michael Russell sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to put the Heels up 1-0 - in part thanks to an excellent slide on a play at the plate, which Tim De Block has generously converted into .GIF format for your viewing pleasure:

Corpus Christi Hooks (AA) - Jake Buchanan got off to a bit of a rough start, allowing two runs in the bottom of the first inning to the Frisco RoughRiders (TEX), but recovered quickly and shut them down the rest of the way. Unfortunately, Frisco's pitchers got an early start on the shutting-down part, as the Hooks couldn't muster a single run and dropped the game 2-0.

Lancaster Jethawks (A+) - After Delino DeShields struck out to begin the bottom half of the first inning, Joe Sclafani drew a walk, then Andrew Aplin popped out to the catcher. With two outs, the fun began. MP Cokinos singled. Preston Tucker walked. A wild pitch scored Sclafani. Telvin Nash doubled home two runs. Tyler Heineman homered. Yes, that Tyler Heineman. With five runs on the board in the first, Lancaster put up six more over the next three innings, and despite allowing three runs to the Rancho Cucamonga (LAD) offense over the final two frames, Lancaster won handily, 11-3, on a solid performance by starter David Rollins.

Teoscar Hernandez doubled in the third, advanced to third on a Carlos Correa flyout, and was brought in on a Jesse Wierzbicki single. From there, the River Bandits never looked back as they pulled off the victory, 5-3.

But Kyle Westwood came in to shut the door, along with Albert Minnis and Chia-Jen Lo. Greeneville Astros (Rk) - Greenville! Everyone loves the Appalachian League, and I for one am stoked to see them get underway in Greeneville. Of course, everything is better with a win, but it wasn't in the cards yesterday, as the Bluefield Blue Jays (TOR) put up two runs in the second inning and shut the Greeneville offense down. The Astros scattered seven hits, but ultimately fell, 5-0.

DSL Astros (Rk) - The Dominican Summer League - if you believe in such a thing - is a strange, wonderful place where strange, wonderful things happen. It's a land where all the ERAs are sparkling, because every batted ball seems to result in an error. This one was no exception, as the DSL Astros and DSL Red Sox (BOS) combined for four errors - two apiece - and were tied at three heading into the bottom of the ninth. It didn't last long, however, as Junior Garcia discovered the one surefire way to prevent a batted ball from becoming an error: He surrendered a walk-off home run to the first batter he faced. Astros lose, 4-3.

DSL Astros: 9-7, 3rd (4.5 GB) - Dominican Summer League Boca Chica Northwest
