Houston Astros Minor League Recap: 6/13/13

A pair of come-from-behind victories combine with a blowout win and a blowout loss to make the domestic teams 3-1 on the day, as the DSL Astros pull off a victory to give the farm a 4-1 day.

Oklahoma City RedHawks (AAA) - The RedHawks started off the evening hot, building a 6-0 lead after a solid fourth inning and a solid start from Brad Peacock. That's when the wheels came off the bus. Lefties Kevin Chapman and Alex Sogard struggled, each giving up three earned runs, and neither pitching a complete inning. By the end of regulation, the Iowa Cubs (CHC) had tied the game 8-8. After three innings of free baseball, Brandon Laird singled to lead off the twelfth inning. After Jonathan Villar popped out on a bunt, Laird advanced to second on a wild pitch. Carlos Perez then singled Laird home for a walkoff 9-8 win.

Corpus Christi Hooks (AA) - Jonathan Singleton is done. After serving a fifty-game suspension to start the season and a brief stint in Quad Cities, Singleton had only three extra-base hits through 32 Double-A plate appearances - none of them home runs. Yesterday, he hit two. Erik Castro and Michael Burgess got in the fun, too, with a home run each as the Corpus Christi offense rolled. Piggyback starters Nick Tropeano and Bobby Doran combined to limit the Frisco Rough Riders (TEX) to a single run. Hooks win, 7-1.

Lancaster Jethawks - A passed ball and a throwing error on Tyler Heineman. A fielding error on Nolan Fontana. Seven earned runs put up on Brady Rodgers before he could get out of the inning. An early exit by Delino DeShields. Things got ugly down in Lake Elsinore (SDP) as the Jethawks got banged around, losing 12-3. But the High Desert Mavericks (SEA) helped Lancaster out by downing the Inland Empire 66ers (LAA) , which moved the Jethawks' magic number down to two. With a win and a 66ers loss on Friday, Lancaster will clinch a playoff berth.

Quad Cities River Bandits (A) - After allowing a leadoff home run to Byron Buxton, Jordan Janikowski buckled down, allowing just one more hit and one walk to go with his 5 strikeouts over 4 innings. Unfortunately, the River Bandits offense couldn't bail him out of trouble. After his exit, they evened the score in the fifth inning and added three more in the seventh to pull ahead 4-1. That's when Juan Minaya and John Neely ran into trouble, giving up seven hits to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (MIN) in the eighth inning. Trailing 8-4 in the bottom of the ninth, the River Bandits made their move. Teoscar Hernandez walked to lead off the inning. Carlos Correa was called out on strikes. Miles Hamblin walked. Jesse Wierzbicki flew out. With two outs, trailing by four runs, Quad Cities was done.

Done, that is, except for a fielding error by Jorge Polanco, which allowed Ruben Sosa to reach base, scoring Hernandez. With the extra out, Quad Cities found their spark. Catfish Elkins singled to score Hamblin. Brian Blasikscored Sosa on an infield single. And Jobduan Morales hit a walk-off double as the River Bandits pulled out the improbable 9-8 victory.

The steal of home was by Jarico Reynoso, the same batter who'd reached first on a passed ball after striking out. Just another day in the DR as the Astros toppled the DSL Indians (CLE) 8-4.
