The top college pitchers each had their own issues this weekend. Mark Appel pitched against USC in front of two dozen scouts, me, and Theo Epstein. And while he didn't have his best stuff, it may have been his best job pitching all season.
Sean Manaea was scratched from his Friday start with a strained hip, but recovered in time to make a start on Sunday, in which he gave up 5 hits, but struck out 9 in 6 innings. Still, it's disappointing news, because hip injuries have a way of lingering and resurfacing. Something to keep an eye on.
Jonathan Gray also lacked his premium stuff, but struck out 8 in 6.2 innings.
Meanwhile, Kris Bryant was limited to DH duties against Loyola-Marymount, and Austin Wilson returned to game action for Stanford, after missing the first few months of the season with a stress reaction in his elbow. Stanford also saw A.J. Vanegas return to the mound.

Notes
- You don't see a lot of junior college position players go early, but I'm hearing a lot of rave reviews for Tim Anderson, a shortstop from East Central Community College. A scout I talked to recently said he believed Anderson is the best shortstop in the draft, from any level. With this particular draft, that might not be saying much, but it's noteworthy.
- Speaking of shortstops, Cypress HS (Calif.) boasts a guy named David Fletcher. Though he isn't likely to be signable at whatever round he ends up getting drafted (unless he shoots up boards), scouts who go out to see Tyler Alamo are walking away impressed by his teammate, Fletcher. Fletcher could perform well in some showcases and shoot up draft boards - he flashed really nice bat speed and spread line drives all over the field at the Hard 9 National Classic. In the finals, he clearly outshined El Dorado's Chris Rivera, who Matt Garrioch famously selected 1-1 for the Astros in a mock draft.
- Connor Justus (SS, Cartersville HS, Georgia) was one of the stars of the Perfect Game High School Showdown, going 5/11 over the weekend, with 2 walks, 2 doubles, and 2 HBP. Final line: .455/.600/.636. It's still not clear whether the Georgia Tech commit will stick at shortstop or become a plus defender at third, but he's beginning to crawl up draft boards.
