Astros Minor League Recap: April 22, 2013

Rio Ruiz brakes out while Robbie Grossman breaks down.

Robbie Grossman is Human in OkC's 8-1 Loss

We talked about Grossman yesterday, and we'll discuss him again. This time for the opposite reason. He still drew a walk, but the man shows his mortality with three strikeouts. Rudy Owens has been fairly good this year and he showed why pitching in Albuquerque can be similar to Lancaster. Kyle Hallock and Lance Day experienced it as well.

  • Rudy Owens-4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO, 5/1 GO/AO, 75/44 P/S
  • Kyle Hallock-3 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR, 6/0 GO/AO, 44/28 P/S-The strikeouts are encouraging
  • Lance Day-1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO
  • Robbie Grossman CF-0-4, BB, 3 SO
  • Che-Hsuan Lin LF-1-2, 2 BB, SO
  • Jonathan Villar SS-2-4, 2B, E
  • Cody Clark C-1-4, HR

Mier Runs into Rockhounds in 2-1 Loss

Jiovanni Mier has had an odd season. Good game and bad games. Batting high in the order and batting low in the order. Last night he was back in the number two hole and reached base twice, once by fielder's choice and a single. Each time he got on base, he immediately swiped second. Jake Buchanan continues his strong return to CC this year with five more scoreless innings, bringing his ERA down to 1.35. The strikeout rate is poor, but the man walks nobody and and induced groundballs at an insane rate.

  • Jake Buchanan-5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 SO, 7/2 GO/AO, 69/46 P/S
  • Carlos Quevedo-3 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 2 HR, 5/3 GO/AO, 49/35 P/S
  • George Springer CF-1-3, BB, SO, SB
  • Jiovanni Mier SS-1-4, 2 SB
  • Jonathan Meyer 3B-2-4, SO
  • Drew Muren RF, 2 BB, SO, CS

Big Extra Inning Lifts QC to 7-2 Win

The bats were quiet early as much of the lineup seemed to struggle with Brent Suter's ridiculously fast pace on the mound. But, the pitching was strong and kept the game together and into the 11th inning when the bats came alive. With two outs in the top of the 11th, Rio Ruiz initiated a rally with a walk that turned into a five run inning. The team drew four walks and picked up three hits in the inning, including Teoscar Hernandez's 3 RBI triple.

  • Daniel Minor-5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 8/2 GO/AO, 64/40 P/S
  • Lance McCullers-4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 5/1 GO/AO, 56/32 P/S

  • Teoscar Hernandez CF-1-5, 3B, BB, SO
  • Austin Elkins 2B-3-6, 2 SO
  • Rio Ruiz 3B-2-4, 2B, BB
  • Ariel Ovando RF-0-3, 2 BB, 2 SO
