TCB March Madness 2013: Carlos Perez Vs Vincent Velasquez

Astros catching prospect Carlos Perez vs pitching prospect Vincent Velasquez.

TCB's Astros Fan Favorite March Madness Tournament is underway. From now until the end of Spring Training, 64 players will face off in a head-to-head public vote to determine who advances to the next round, and who will eventually be crowned the community's favorite Astros player. For more details, click here for the introductory post.

The rules are simple: Determine which player you think should advance to the next round by voting for that player. Arguments made for an advancing player in the comments section below may be used in that player's description for the next round. Vote subjectively, objectively or by using your trusty magic eight ball. Votes will last exactly 24 hours.

In this match-up:

45 - Carlos Perez

Acquired as one of seven players in the Brandon Lyon, J.A. Happ and David Carpenter to Toronto Blue Jays trade, Carlos Perez quickly showed why the Astros had included him in the deal. Between the Blue Jays A level and Astros high A level, Perez hit .285/.350/.438 in 416 plate appearances. His defense is also considered to be solid and reports are that he calls a good game. Currently, Perez is considered one of the top catching prospect in the Astros minor league system.

49 - Vincent Velasquez

Coming off Tommy John surgery that wiped out his entire 2011 season Vincent Velasquez saw limited time on the mound for the Astros Tri-City low A club what innings he did pitch were nothign short of dazzling. In 45.2 starter innings Velazquez posted a 2.85 Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) with 51 strikeouts and 17 walks. 2013 could be a big year for Vincent Velasquez.
