Astros Make First Round of Cuts

The first round of cuts from the Astros Spring Training have been made. No real surprises here but did include big name prospects like George Springer and Delino DeShields. More cuts are expected later this week.

It's Spring Traing and one of the few downsides to that is that players have to be cut at some point or another so they can get to that 25 man limit. This morning was the first round of those cuts.

Per Brian McTaggart:

The first set included Sam Demel and Rudy Owens who are on the 40-man roster so are using options. The next set are Delino DeShields, Jacob Goebbert, Marc Krauss, George Springer, and Chris Wallace who were reassigned to minor league camp.

In all honesty, there really aren't any surprises in this group. I'm sure many are surprised by the fact that Springer and Krauss are in this group since they have both played fairly well and are close to the majors. But, these guys have the ability to go down to the minors and not be exposed to other teams or start service time unlike many of the other options at their positions. Just like we discussed on the podcast Friday, they still need everyday playing time in Spring Training and the season and the major league club isn't where they'll get that kind of at-bats. They never really had legitimate shots of making the opening day roster and were simply getting their cup of coffee to see what it's like to play with big leaguers.

The next round of cuts will happen on Wednesday probably as there are some guys who have been added to the 40-man over the winter and aren't eligible for cuts until later in the week. Presumably, guys like Chia-Jen Lo and Ross Seaton could be in this group. Does Cosart get added in this group? I don't think so, personally.

You can go back and listen to our Friday podcast, as we witnessed all of the guys during Friday's game and guessed that many of these would be in the first round of cuts. It was good seeing them play but we knew what was coming for them. It was in the best interest for the Front Office to get one last look at them in game situations so they know what they need to work on and think about when it comes time to call these guys up.

Are you surprised?
