TCB March Madness 2013: John Ely Vs Brett Phillips

Pitcher John Ely vs center field prospect Brett Phillips

TCB's Astros Fan Favorite March Madness Tournament is underway. From now until the end of Spring Training, 64 players will face off in a head-to-head public vote to determine who advances to the next round, and who will eventually be crowned the community's favorite Astros player. For more details, click here for the introductory post.

The rules are simple: Determine which player you think should advance to the next round by voting for that player. Arguments made for an advancing player in the comments section below may be used in that player's description for the next round. Vote subjectively, objectively or by using your trusty magic eight ball. Votes will last exactly 24 hours.

In this match-up:

10 - John Ely

Picked by Mike Fast to be a pitcher to watch this season, John Ely was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers for prospect Rob Rasmussen. While his results have been subpar at both the major and minor league levels, he does have a good strikeout-per-nine-innings and walks-per-nine-innings rates that suggest he could be a good pitcher going forward.

Vs

55 - Brett Phillips

The toolsy left-handed hitting outfielder Brett Phillips was selected in the sixth round of the 2012 MLB draft. He plays a premium position in center field and plays it well. In 219 plate appearances at rookie ball he posted a .251 batting average, a .360 on-base percentage and a .360 slugging percentage. Known more for his speed and defense, what becomes of his bat will be the primary determiner in defining Phillips as a player.
