Astros Suffer First Loss Of Spring Training To Jeff Luhnow's Former Employer

Context is a big thing when discussing the results of players and team wins or losses. The Astros lineup featured several players who had a good chance of being on the major league team when camp breaks; the pitchers, on the other hand, were not. Likewise the St. Louis Cardinals lineup featured several players expected to be with the team on Opening Day and the starter for the game was Adam Wainwright, likely the teams ace. That right there kind of gives you an idea why the Astros such a lopsided loss.

Batters

Marwin Gonzalez was the only Astros with multiple hits in this game. Both Astros runs scored came without a hit being recorded as George springer (0-2) and Chris Wallace (0-1) collected both RBIs. Nate Freiman continued his good start to Spring Training with a 1-2 day with a run scored. Overall the Astros scored two runs on eight hits and one walk.

Pitching

It was down hill after the first inning. Phil Humber gave up only one run in his two innings of work but also walked three guys. Sam Demel and Dallas Keuchel both allowed three or more runs to score and Paul Clemens, after giving up two walks and a run, slipped on the field while trying to cover first base. Initially it sounded like Clemens had gone down hard but Bo Porter after the game said it looked worse than it was so hopefully the Astros avoid adding Clemens to the injury report. The only Astros pitcher to leave Roger Dean Stadium unscathed was CJ Fick who worked two shutout innings. Overall, Astros pitching allowed 10 runs on 15 hits and 5 walks
