Astros offseason: Houston signs outfielder Adron Chambers

Another former Cardinal joins the Astros as Houston agrees to terms with the center fielder.

In addition to adding Peter Moylan over the weekend, the Houston Astros have made another free agent addition to the roster. This time, it's former St. Louis outfielder Adron Chambers. That's according to TCB's own Sean Feist:

Chambers was outrighted off the Cardinals 40-man roster at the beginning of November and was eligible to sign with any team at that point. He's the second member of the Cardinals organization to join Houston in the past week, after the Astros grabbed Ryan Jackson off waivers last Wednesday.

Chambers has hit .216/.289/.295 in 99 career plate appearances over three seasons with the Cardinals. The most playing time Chambers got was 41 games and 62 PAs in 2012, when he hit .222/.300/.296 with an 8 percent walk rate and 29 percent strikeout rate.

The 27-year old has hit .283 in over 1,000 at-bats the past three seasons in Triple-A and has looked good defensively in the outfield. In essence, Chambers is a replacement for Che-Hsuan Lin, who is a minor league free agent after spending the entire 2013 season with Oklahoma City.

No, this move won't inspire much confidence, but it can't hurt to collect good defensive outfielder who can hit a little bit, can it? Kudos, too, for Sean running down this information. He had it before even the estimable Chris Cotillo did.
