Three more debuts last night, this time it was Rudy Owens, Robbie Grossman, and Matt Heidenreich. Luhnow is trying to make me go insane with these names. Heidenreich and Grossman made very good debuts, but with Owens, not so much.
Owens had a very rough first inning in which he allowed three of his season high four walks, but only allowed just one run. So, even though he allowed a lot of baserunners, he fought through it to limit the damage. He threw over thirty pitches in that first inning alone, and wound with 88 total. So, that kind of illustrates how bad things were. He settled in fairy well to allow just two more runs over the next four innings. I'm gonna chalk this one up to the nerves.
Grossman picked up two hits and a walk without striking out in his debut for CC. He played CF, and from what I've heard, didn't look bad out there. Looked patient and worked the count.
Heidenreich is the story though. Had he been with the organization all season, I would go ahead and say he would have pitched a complete game last night. But, it was his debut with the Astros, so he finished the 8th inning with 93 pitches and stayed in the dugout for the 9th. His high 3/4-over the top delivery combined with his height really give him a nice downward plane for his fastball, which makes it very difficult to elevate. That's where he found his success, evident by a 11/3 GO/AO. He also missed some bats with four swinging strikeouts. Pretty good control despite his raw mechanics. I think as his body matures, mechanics and control will improve some which may help his off-speed stuff.
