Astros Minor League Recap: July 20, 2012

We knew going into the night that there wasn't going to be much to talk about as far as pitching was concerned, and that lived up to the billing. Vincent Velasquez pitched well, but wasn't overly dominant past the second inning. He started losing some control and walked the second and third batters of the 4th inning to eventually lead to damage. Overall, he pitched well and his fastball once again reached mid-90s.

Offenses were great for the most part (I'm not looking at you Houston or GCL). I continue to be impressed by Brandon Meredith in Lexington, even if it did take a while for his power to show up. He went on a tear for awhile where he hit a lot of bombs, but last night he hit a double and a triple. Chris Epps had another good night in Lancaster where he hit yet another home run, but I am weary of his performance there because it is far from consistent with previous hitting.

At the bottom of the front page, you may have noticed a new name down there under Authors. Meet our new writer Wrigley Faithful (we've gotta work on that name, lol). Many of you are familiar with him as he has posted many pictures on this site from his trip to Spring Training and a few other posts as well as his blog, The Grand Old Game. I've linked to it before for his scouting report on Delino DeShields Jr. and I'm linking to it now for his report on Chan Moon. He'll be posting reports just like these here now. I'm really excited for him to join us and know you all will enjoy his stuff.

Chan Moon is a very interesting prospect as he was hyped up a bit by the front office when he was signed, probably to show their efforts in scouting the pacific rim. If I recall correctly he was said to be an athletic 3B with a little pop, but that's not Moon's game. It has taken him a little while to develop, but improved a lot last year in Greeneville and has really started to take off this season in Lexington and now Lancaster. From this report,, he brings a lot to the table in defense and personality. He won't be a stud at the plate, but sounds like he won't be a whole there that brings value at defense only.
