Astros Minor League Recap: July 10, 2012

Overall, it was a pretty good day in the minors yesterday despite Lexington and Oklahoma City having days off. The only teams that lost were the the GCL and DSL teams. The biggest win came from Corpus as the Hooks offense burst out with 16 runs. Justin Maxwell continued his rehab assignment with them since the OkC team is on their All-Star break with MLB, and he came away impressed. He even tweeted last night that the Astros have a good farm system and for everybody to look up the box score. Even the players are recognizing that this organization is heading the right way. How can you not see a Hooks game and come away impressed with at least Jonathan Singleton.

Andrew Aplin is continuing his tear through the NYPL as he got on base another three times last night. His OBP is now at .506! Insane that a player is getting on base over half the times he comes to the plate. Small sample size? I don't care! In 80 PA, that is still impressive. Ok, I know it will come down, especially with a .426 BABIP, but it's still exciting. He and Nolan Fontana are highlighting the type of players this organization wants in college hitters this year with their walk and strikeout rates. Aplin has literally drawn twice as many walks as he's struck out (14 BB:7 SO).

The only concerning thing is his power. Only two doubles and two triples to this point. He sprays line drives at over 20% clip (SSS), but you would expect more doubles at this point. He's not going to develop to hit home runs, but I would like to see more doubles. Although, he does manufacture them at a good rate as he has 13 SB and 3 CS.
