Astros Minor League Recap: June 27, 2012

Have something I have to clear up. Yesterday I wrote that Aaron West had major arm surgery because that's what I found in all the other articles. However, that is misinformation. West simply had a surgery to clean things up like some frayed cartilage to reduce irritation in his elbow. Simple surgery, takes a few months to get back from, but nothing to be concerned about at all moving forward.

Other tidbit on West is his repertoire and his keys to success so far. Apparently I missed something cause I had no idea of his velocity and many of you already do. But, in his last start he was 87-88 for the first inning but built that up to 94-95 at the top end. He also throws a changeup and slider. He was able to work both sides of the plate effectively with all three pitches the other night. So far, he's been successful in getting ahead in the count and staying aggressive. Good signs, I'm liking this guy!

I want to point out something with Chris Epps. Since his promotion to Lancaster, he has been scorching the ball. He has five home runs in just fifty at-bats. Impressive no matter how you spin it. He had just two in 87 at-bats with Lexington. Although, Epps is an athletic outfielder with some tools, I'm weary of his stats. He is a lefty and those are the hitters that get helped the most by Lancaster's winds. Proof: Four of his five are in his five games that he's played in Lancaster. However, he is still hitting well away from Lancaster.
