Today marks week one of the season into the books, and we are already going to begin discussion about player promotions. Yeah, it's all about Telvin Nash. Can this discussion be avoided? Nope! Why not? Oh, something about five home runs in six games, including two games with two home runs each.
We knew coming into this season that Nash had legitimate monster power. We knew it when we all first laid eyes on him when he was selected in the 3rd round of the 2009 draft. It didn't matter that he didn't show it in his first season, because he showed it the next year in Greeneville. So, we all knew that he would put up big power numbers this season because of the offensive environment of the Cal League, but this much? I doubt anybody would have thought about this many home runs so soon.
So, what's holding him in place at Lancaster, and likely will for awhile? Two things. One, Telvin has strikes out a ton, despite a patient approach that allows for him to draw walks. Part of this reason is because he knows he can put the ball over the fence and will consequently over swing. The other part is that he has holes in his swing. But, this leads us to the most impressive part to his start, three strikeouts in 27 plate appearances. Could the holes have been minimized during the off-season and spring? Or, could it be he has been lucky to make contact on his big cuts? Only time will tell as the sample size gets larger.
The other factor is that he's blocked by two other guys who are occupying CC who are very similar to him in Jonathan Singleton and Kody Hinze. Singleton is more highly touted and Hinze is older and the FO has to find out exactly what they have in him. One will have to prove they are also ready for a promotion or Hinze has to flounder completely and badly enough for the FO to give up on him so soon.
