Ariel Ovando has now played in six games for Greeneville, so lets take a look at his overall numbers, despite the small sample size.
7-23 (.304), 2 2B, 1 BB, 6 SO
Not bad at all. Sure, it's a .725 OPS but for a kid who is 17 years old in rookie level ball and facing professional pitching for the first time, that is impressive. Most high school kids at this level are a few months or even a year older and already 18. Still, the average age is around 20 or 21. He's been able to square up on a few and drive a few balls. He may be striking out some, but as far as experience is concerned, he's in over his head. But, early returns suggest he has the tools and talent to stay with them, despite being injured. Still, it's not numbers to get excited about because its obviously a very extremely small sample size.
And, forgot to mention, Jake Buchanan was tossing a no-no into the seventh until he walked a guy and then gave up a hit to Rod Barajas. He's been very good this season, and has experienced a ton of success. His groundball tendencies are amazing, but it's hard to ignore his very poor strikeout rate. His K/9 is a little south of six and is a glaring hole. It actually seems that it's gone down as the season has wore down. Although, if anything, he has a good chance of making a major league roster eventually with that groundball rate.
