Here's an interesting question for you: two players, one has a stronger track record in the minors, the other has slightly less pedigree in performance but has more versatility and was selected slightly higher in the draft. Who has the better shot to make the big leagues?
The two players I'm thinking of here are J.D. Martinez and Jake Goebbert, who was selected in the 2009 draft out of Northwestern in the 13th round. Martinez obviously has the best chance to make the majors, as he's hit and hit for power in every minor league level he's been.
But, Goebbert has had a similar power profile to Martinez this season and, while he doesn't have J.D.'s profile at every stop, he's been playing some first base for Corpus. That gives him a bit of versatility that Martinez lacks. I don't think Goebbert will have the ceiling of Martinez, but if he keeps up this performance, he's probably got just as good a shot at making the majors. It may be as a fourth outfielder, but that's better than paying Jason Michael a million dollars again.
