Astros Thursday Minor League Recap

As I looked through the MiLB.com schedules yesterday morning (as I do every morning), I got very excited to write this post.  Why?  Jordan Lyles, Kyle Greenwalt, Luis Cruz, David Martinez, Mike Foltynewicz, and Jose Perdomo were all on the mound for last night.  I expected to see a lot of strikeouts in the box scores since a lot of those guys have a lot of potential to do so.  Lyles, Cruz, Folty, and Perdomo, especially, can put up impressive strikeout numbers and it always gets me giddy to see them.

Unfortunately, I didn't see that when I checked them again at 11:30 last night.  Cruz and Perdomo but up the great numbers, while Folty and Lyles disappointed me.  But, there is always a silver lining as Stephen illustrated yesterday!  That silver lining was that these guys are really learning and developing.  How can I tell?  Look at the groundouts to flyouts underneath the pitching box scores.  Folty and Perdomo reached double digit groundouts in their performances and Lyles was just one short of ten.  These guys are really understand how to keep the ball down in the zone and using the defense behind you to get the outs that they need.  It shows maturity and understanding of how to pitch.  Since Perdomo did both strikeout and induce groundouts, he easily had the most impressive start.  He has continually impressed me all short-season long and I'm excited to see what he can do as he moves up.

Round Rock lost 1-0

  • Jordan Lyles (4.37)-6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 SO-Nine groundouts and five flyouts.  Thats a really good line but I'm going to be picky and ask for more strikeouts and less walks.  He's probably just adjusting to a tighter strikezone and he has said that he's been having trouble with his fastball command.
  • Drew Locke RF (.287)-1-2, 2 BB

Corpus Christi won 4-3

  • Mike Folty (4.28)-5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO-Twelve groundouts to just one flyout!  Thats a great stat right there.  But, I'm going to be picky and ask for more strikeouts.
