Ya'll already know all about Ben Heath's big night on Friday, so I'm not going to sit here and tell you what you already know. But, I am going to talk about Heath for a brief moment. Obviously, he was drafted in the fifth round as a power hitting catcher, and he has done nothing but hit since he signed. So, why was he not more highly rated? Why was he not included in Andy Seiler's draft notebook? Simple, there were serious question marks about his ability to stick behind the plate and was beleived that his bat couldn't provide enough value anywhere else on the field. I have to disagree with that. No, I haven't watched him behind the plate and no, I don't have other scouting reports to support my statement. But, what I do have, is knowledge of what Bobby Heck likes in position players. One of the top things he likes is potential to stick at premium defensive positions and above average defensive players at other positions. What does that tell me? Heck wouldn't have drafted him if he thought Heath had no business behind the plate. Does that make him good defensive catcher? Nope, but it does give me confidence in Heath's ability to be a catcher! BOOM!
(Sorry about the BOOM! My brother-in-law told me a story about his boss a few days ago and him saying BOOM, so I felt like I needed to put it here.)
