There were some great pitching performances, most notably, Kyle Greenwalt's gem IN Lancaster of all places.  A lot of swinging strikeouts is always nice to see from young pitchers.

But, I want to discuss a little about this blog post from 'Cats Corner.  It's a very interesting read about advanced fielding statistics and what to do with fielding statistics in the minors.  As I'm sure you know there is only one advanced metric for the minors, and thats the very inaccurate and unreliable Total Zone.  So, this brings up another way to evaluate a team as a whole.  Many of you are already familiar with it, it's called Defensive Efficiency Rating.  While it doesn't necesarily help us evaluate an individual's defensive ability, but it can help us draw some conclusions.  They applied the outcome for Tri-City's rating to what they know as far as seeing the players perform on the field.  While, we don't actually get to see much on the field, we typically do have scouting reports on some of the players at every level, so we can then reason an approximate idea of how the remaining players on the field. It's a very innacurate way, but there's not much else we can do since TZ ratings aren't released until after the season.

  • Kyle Greenwalt (5.70)-9 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO, 1 HR-This the type of game that provoked Orem to write an article earlier in the season to see if he's an under-rated prospect! I can't wait to see what he can do outside of the California League.  This game was even in Lancaster!
