The Astros host the surprising San Diego Padres for a three-game weekend series starting Friday. Righthander Mat Latos will face off with Bud Norris in the first game. Latos and Norris were both highly-regarded prospects who made their debuts last season. Latos has been volatile this season, with both good and bad outings. His 5.47 ERA is the worst out of the five Padres starters, but his xFIP is not only a full run lower than his ERA, but it's also lower than free agent addition Jon Garland.
Garland will face Felipe Paulino on Saturday. Garland is currently sporting a 2.06 ERA thanks to team-low BABiP of .248. Garland is the highest-paid member of the Padres' staff, but has the second-lowest K rate. He's also giving up a high percentage of line drives and seems to be escaping by getting a ton of infield fly balls (12.9 percent).
Opening Day starter Kevin Correia will face Roy Oswalt on Sunday. Correia already has four victories and boasts the highest ground ball rate on the staff. His walk rate is pretty high, but a low BABiP and an xFIP that's lower than his ERA suggest his numbers could change in the coming months. Correia primarily works off his fastball for success with average secondary pitches.
Offensively, the Padres are led by someone you may have heard of before, first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. He's been mentioned in more trade rumors than, well, I don't know anyone who's been in more. He currently leads the team with a wOBA of .389. The next three players on the wOBA list are all batting over .370 and are big reasons why the Padres are 17-11. Yorvit Torrealba, Scott Hairston and Chase Headley are giving the Padres plenty of pop in the lineup. The only offense players to struggle out of the gate are second baseman David Eckstein and shortstop Everth Cabrera (sound familiar?)
The bullpen is backed by Heath Bell, who already has seven saves. Mike Adams and Cesar Ramos are the next two guys called out of the bullpen, while Luke Gregorson has been one of the more 'clutch' members of the 'pen, with a WPA per Leverage Index of 1.18.
