Tough loss last night as Brian Moehler made it through 2 innings, allowing 5 runs to pretty much close the door on any chance the Astros had to winning last night. The Astros have now lost 6 of their last 7 games and watched any chance they had of making the Wild Card all but vanish.
Berkman is making no excuses for their current position.
Berkman pointed out that poor play earlier this year is as much to blame as their losing stretch now. The Astros' longest losing streak was eight, June 11-19, and they've had a bunch of other shorter stretches that were still just as damaging standings-wise.
"That's the reason why you play 162 games, to sort out who has the best team over the long haul, not who plays the best for a month and a half," Berkman said. "It's who plays the best for six months, and we've had not only this rough spot, but others that have cost us.
"People want to focus on this right now, which they should, because that's where we are in the season. But you forget about stretches in the past that have hurt us. That's why if you play a little better in the beginning or middle parts of the season, you don't have a mad scramble and have to win every single game you play at the end of the season to have a chance to make the playoffs."
A win today gives the Astros a .500 record against the Pirates this season... sad really.
