Took his time, got it done.
Just a week ago, it seemed folly to suggest that Dan Wheeler might save his season. But Wheels has pitched really well in seven straight appearances.
His appearance tonight truly put the "hero" in "Game Hero," with the team's ace limping off, with the tying run on second and no outs. Wheeler took forever to throw his first pitch, then rather methodically crushed the Pirates' comeback hopes for the following two innings.
Along with Oswalt's injury, the cockamamie ninth inning will naturally be the focus of conversation. That's understandable. But to me, it was most exciting to watch Wheeler pitch the way he did when he was making his reputation, rather than when he was destroying it.
