Short Season Opening Night

Our two short season affiliates, freshly stocked with players from the recent June draft, and armed with others ready to graduate from our academies in the Dominican and in Venezuela, begin their 2-1/2 month schedules this evening.

Greeneville--the only Astros affiliate not to make the playoffs in 2006--hosts the Johnson City Cardinals. G-ville has not yet named their starter as I write.

Meanwhile, Tri-City, who played for the New York-Penn League championship in '06, visits the Vermont Lake Monsters. Colt Adams--only 1 - 1 with an 11.77 in 10 games for Greeneville a year ago--starts the season for the ValleyCats.

I have to imagine he has impressed in the extended spring.

The Greeneville roster contains three players who spent some time with the club last year. Only one player with Tri-City--third baseman Brandon Caipen--played for the V-Cats last year.

Note that our top two picks are still not on roster, with our third round selection, David Dietrich, and our fourth round pick, Brett Eibner, still unsigned.

Collin Delome, from Lamar University, will be the highest draft pick playing tonight, starting in the outfield somewhere I'm sure for our NY-Penn affiliate.

In all, 26 draft picks of the 42 selected will suit up tonight, 9 for Greeneville, and 17 for Tri-City.

No-one is making the jump from an overseas academy to Short A, while six players jump from the Dominican Republic to Greeneville, and four jump from Venezuela to our Rookie affiliate.
