Matchup/Game Thread Game # 134 vs. Brewers

Doug Davis Andy Pettitte
9 - 8, 5.17 12 - 13, 4.56
Just odds and ends tonight, and this just in: Backe's gonna have Tommy John surgery. With that kinetic optimism of his, he thinks he'll be pitching this time next year, but less rash minds point to April 2007.

Which is a long time away.

Jason Hirsh was named the PCL Pitcher of the Year yesterday, a just reward for the 13 - 2, 2.10 season he had with Round Rock before being called up to mixed results August 12.

With last year's Texas League award, that makes two straight years Hirsh been been named his league's best pitcher. Guess that means they can put Jason's name on the 2007 NL Cy Young award right now save themselves some time.

To follow up on the Avalanche story of the other day, turns out that Salem did defeat Wilmington in the suspended opener of their four game series, but they last the second game of the series, and their bid to nab the longest win streak in Carolina League history fell short by three. Roanoke.com notes that during the streak, the Avs averaged 6.79 runs per game, while giving up an average of only two.

Greeneville finished their Appy League season with a 34 - 33 record last night. One of the hotter teams in the league over the last few weeks of the season, playoffless Greeneville was prevented from finishing the season in sole possessionof of second place in the West division when they lost the last game to Kingsport.

Minor League Baseball.com also reports that Greeneville pitcher Sergio Severino won last week's Pitcher of the Week award. Severino was 1 - 0 with a 1.50 over the week prior to August 27, and he ends the year as the Apply League strieklout leader.
