The Denver Post is reporting that the Astros are the team most likely to land Jason Jennings while local radio shows in Houston are saying that the deal between the White Sox and the Astros for Garland is really close to happening.
Basically what I'm hearing is that to land Jennings, the Astros are going to be giving up Jason Hirsh and Willy Taveras or Dan Wheeler and to land Garland it's going to take at least Jason Hirsh and Willy Taveras.
All along I've been pulling to land Garland over Jennings. Jennings' numbers just didn't really impress me. I went ahead and did a little comparison of Garland and Jennings over the last three years and after comparing them, I think I've swayed my opinion. Take into consideration that Jennings is a year younger than Garland and has been pitching in Colorado. Jennings is also a Texas boy, which doesn't mean much... but it's something.
Player | ERA | W | L | GS | CG | IP | H | R | ER | HR | BB | SO | AVG |
Jennings | 4.71 | 26 | 34 | 85 | 4 | 535 | 577 | 292 | 280 | 55 | 248 | 350 | 0.277 |
Garland | 4.3 | 48 | 28 | 97 | 5 | 649.1 | 682 | 330 | ER | 86 | 164 | 340 | 0.273 |
Player | HR/9IP | H/9IP | SO/9IP | BB/9IP | IP/GS |
Jennings | 0.93 | 9.71 | 5.89 | 4.17 | 6.29 |
Garland | 1.19 | 9.46 | 4.71 | 2.27 | 6.69 |
I'm not saying I think if we landed Jennings that he would come here and be sub 3.00 ERA guy... but I think he could be a serviceable pitcher for the Astros.
