Woody Williams

As an addendum to the story about our contract offers to Lee and Soriano last night, The Chronicle noted that we were pursuing Woody Williams for the third time I think this century.

I guess Jamie Moyer is gonna be unavailable, and we've decided that Clemens or no, we're gonna need to have a 40-year old pitcher on roster.

Now, Williams had a nice season last year.  But you got to wonder whether it might not have been an anomaly.  Certainly in the years before 2006, the decline looked kind of standard.

The only thing I don't understand is that if cavernous Petco Park helped stop the precipitous decline in 2006, why didn't it help in 2005?

Hell, I know we need a cheap and reliable starter, and acknowledge the fact that we might not be able to do better.  But if I were T-Purp, I'd be telling Woody "don't call us, we'll call you."
