4-1 Tigers
in the 2d inning. Williams has given up some hard hit balls and a lot of flyballs on a windy day.  Berkman with a HR.

8-1 Tigers in the 3d.
3 run HR by Renteria. Second HR of the day by Pudge.  Woody is getting neck exercise.

Ouch
10 hits, 4 HR, 8 ER, 0 K in 3 IP.  two of Woody's three ST appearances have been atrocious.  he certainly won't NOT make the club (like the use of the double negative?), but how bad does he have to pitch before he loses his spot in the rotation?  i'm not even saying he's there yet.  it's still only three appearances and 7.2 innings, but he'd better show something at some point.

Probably going to take a lot
since nobody else is really oing that well either(other than Roy)
Go 'Stros!

bottom 4th
Moehler has some bad luck.  Lee lost a fly ball that should have been the third out, but bounced for a double.  then a grounder hits a bad bounce and hops over Tejada to score a run.  neither scored an error, but the run is hardly Moehler's fault.

9-1 Tigers.

Williams
When are they gonna realize that he does'nt have anything left? Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine can get away with throwing 86 MPH because the can hit their spots nearly every time and have good movement. Woody throws BP fastballs and is missing with his offspeed stuff, he is'nt getting it done. I'd rather watch figure skating than watch him pitch, and I hate figure skating(except when Katarina Witt was doing it, because she was Smokin' Hot).

bottom 5th
Rogers cruising through his half of the inning.  he gave up the dinger to Berkman, but otherwise scattered only two hits and no walks, with two Ks, over five innings.

Moehler still pitching.

Rodriguez flies out, just short of his third home run of the game.

Jones grounds out.

Granderson flies out to Erstad in right.

Pretty good outing for Moehler.  I'm sure Coop will forgive the run in the 4th.

top 6th
Virgil Vasquez in to pitch.  Don't know if he's a major leaguer or not.

Bourn leads off with a line single to right.

He's erased on a GIDP from Loretta.

Tejada drives a double deep off the wall in right.

Berkman draws a walk.

Lee tattoos one, but right at the third baseman.

Should have done some damage that inning.

Still 9-1 Tigers.

bottom 6th
Moehler out for another one.  Polanco led off with the first legit hit off Brian today.

He's got no problem with the next three, getting Ordonez on strikes.

I think Moehler's been making a solid bid to get a spot on the roster.

Still 9-1 Tigers.

Erstad leads off with a homer.

9-2 now.

Wiggy
hit on the hand, takes 1st.

Cruz with a long fly double over Granderson's head, maybe a bit wind-aided.  Wiggy scores from 1st.

9-3 now.

Ausmus, Bourn, and Loretta
are retired in succession and Cruz is stranded at 2nd.

Nice that we picked up a run, but with a man on 2nd and no outs, you'd like to think somebody can drive him in somehow.

another correction
it was Abercrombie, not Bourn, helping to strand Cruz at 2nd.

As much crap as Wade...
has taken over the Erstad signing from the national media, it is great to see Erstad have a fine spring training.

i didn't realize
he was taking that much crap.

i thought it was a decent enough signing.  he hasn't had a good season in a while, but all we're asking him to do is be a pinch hit lefty and not embarass himself in the field.  i'm guessing he's going to fill that role at least as good as Palmeiro has in the last two years.  hopefully his solid spring portends good things.

bottom 7th
Brocail in, gives up 4 singles (1 run) to start the inning, but gets a popup, a K, and a flyball out to end it.

10-3 Tigers.

top 8th
Astros pick up another run.  Diaz scored either on Newhan's opposite field single, or Wiggy's ground rule double.  Can't remember.

Wiggy having a nice day today.  Some small positives coming out of today's beating.

10-4 Tigers.

bottom 8th
Paronto in the game.  infield single and a double to the wall score another run.

11-4 Tigers.

Paronto may be on the outside looking in at this point.

Top 9th
Perez, Abercrombie, and Castillo go harmlessly 1-2-3 the beat down is over.

Tigers win 11-4.

Moehler with a pretty good outing, but Woody was rocked and Brocail and Paronto both had fairly forgettable outings.

Wiggy was 2-3 with a double.  Cruz was 2-4 with two doubles.  Bourn was 1-3.  Erstad and Berkman homered.  Tejada doubled.  Most of the hitters we care about had a pretty good day.

Another day for the "score doesn't matter" speech, which I'm sure we're all getting tired of.  Not quite half way through Spring Training, so lots of time for guys to swing either way, hopefully mostly towards the positive results.

Woody's comments on the official site
are a joke.

http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080312&content_id=2422128&vkey=spt2008n ews&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou

He gave up 7 XBHs in 3 innings and thought he made some good pitches? Tip your hat to other team? Maybe he should realize that he should be throwing those "good pitches" in a beer league.

He doesn't have anything that will get out MLB hitters anymore and I hope the Astros keep his leash so short they won't be doomed right out of the gates. I keep hearing "what else do they have"? Well they keep stats like performance over or under replacement value and Woody is on the wrong side. That means just about any decent AAA kid or a journeyman could do better.

180IP of 5.28ERA is really damn easy to come by. And Woody will be lucky to put that up again.

I still like Jason Hirsh
