Houston Astros : Paulino Injured; Berkman Leaves Game Early

Great... another injury...

Right-hander Felipe Paulino flew back to Houston on Monday to be examined by team medical director David Lintner after complaining of soreness in his upper right arm.

"He told [head athletic trainer] Dave Labossiere he's had some discomfort for a while," general manager Ed Wade said. "I wish he had spoken up a little bit sooner, but we'll go ahead and get it addressed. ... Hopefully it's something minor."

I have(had) high hopes for Paulino... I don't know why, but had a sneaking suspicion that he would be at least a good part of the team this year. This injury kind of scares me though... hopefully he won't have to go the route of Backe(season before last) and have a major surgery to repair his arm.

Maybe I'm sounding immature... but I really kind of wish they would have kept Matsui's injury in less specific terms. It wouldn't have bothered me if they would have left it at "stomach" problems... Astros.com is going as far as reporting it as "anal fissure" now... WHY DO WE NEED TO KNOW THAT!

So Berkman left the game today because of tightness in his leg. Doesn't seem to be anything real serious, but he is the Big Puma, and this will be the 2nd time he's missed any sort of playing time this Spring Training due to heath reasons.
"I had to tag and score on a short fly ball," Berkman said. "After that, I felt it a little bit and struck out in my next at-bat. So, I hadn't done anything for an hour and a half. I hit that double and I was thinking about if I should go for third on that one. When I got up to speed, I definitely felt it. It's Spring Training. During the season, I wouldn't have come out of the game."

On a lighter note, the Astros did manage to beat the Blue Jays today 4-3 taking their Spring Training record to 5-8. Berkman was exceptionally well coming up a single short of a cycle. Roy-O went 4 innings and gave up 3 runs.

You don't want details....
on Kaz's anal fissures?  Well, that's nothing compared to reported details regarding Felix Pie's twisted testicles.
http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2008/03/pie-out-3-5-day.html

The article seems discrete at the start, saying he will have surgery for a personal problem.  But then go into some detail of "manual" adjustments of the problem and what the surgery will do.

I'm not even going to open it
Pou've told me more than I want to know.

 (so how will Pie pee?)

i agree 100%
i don't know how personal the Japanese culture is, but i imagine this is extremely embarassing for him.  are there some kind of full disclosure rules or something?  especially on the official site, you'd think they'd be a bit more discreet.

on Paulino
we should know more today.  i'm guessing he's getting an MRI to see if there's any damage.  it's his "upper arm", so i suppose that means it's not his shoulder or elbow.  not sure if that's a good thing.  i don't really know what kind of scary injuries there would be in his "upper arm".  i suppose anything with ligaments or tendons would be scary, but i'm pretty oblivious when it comes to sports medicine.

hopefully we'll get some good news later today.

Wasn't Backe's
Problems originally in the upper-arm?  I can't remember... maybe I'm thinking that when they do the Tommy john surgery, they take a tendon from the upper-arm... hell I can't remember...

(wikipedia here I come)...

Ah, forearm, not upperarm...  Upperarm makes me think, shoulder injury... guess we'll see.

Tommy John surgery...
takes a tendon from somewhere in the body (usually part of the hamstring) and makes a new ligament in the elbow.  That's why Nieve's hamstring injury was blamed on his surgery.

Anyway, read more here.  Gotta love the wiki.

woops
two more seconds of diggin on Chron.com and i found this

not GREAT news, but pinched nerves heal completely (or at least whenver i've had one).  it just takes a little rest.  doesn't portend any career threatening surgery or anything.  sucks his shot at the rotation is pretty much over.  he'll have to get some innings at RR and see where he/we stand in the first month of the season.

That'll be interesting...
That should put Paulino and Nieve back at about the same time.

I wonder how quick Wade and Coop will be to call up these guys if someone(s) struggling in the bullpen or the rotation.

Note that Paulino....
will be out(won't pick up a ball) for at least 1 month.  The use of the phrase "at least" is interesting.  But, you have to wonder how quickly he can get back to being capable of  pitching in AAA. After he is allowed to pitch, he probably will have to go through rehab in the instructional camp to get his arm strength.  It might be mid-May or so before he can be starting games at Round Rock, I suspect.
