Astros considering pitcher, Chacon

Astros.com reports that the Astros have made an offer to pitcher Shawn Chacon:

"'I'm talking to his agent but we haven't reached any agreement yet,' Wade said.

It is unclear how close the two sides are to finalizing a deal, but it appears there is interest on both sides. Any final agreement would be contingent on Chacon passing a physical, and the two sides could be that close to putting a deal in place.

A message left for Horwits was not immediately returned.

Chacon is versatile enough to serve in both starting and relief roles, although he prefers to start. The fact that the Astros have holes in their starting rotation could be enticing to the 30-year-old righty. Chacon was moved from the Pirates' rotation to the bullpen midway through the 2007 season, not because of poor performance, but because the Bucs 'pen was in desperate need of help.

In a relief role, Chacon emerged as a solid setup man and received most of his work in the eighth inning. The Astros have Doug Brocail and/or Oscar Villarreal penciled in as setup men but may embrace another late game option.

Chacon's first choice was to remain with the Pirates, but because there is probably no room in their rotation and his salary demands were far from what the Bucs were offering, it appears Chacon is looking elsewhere. He's been rumored to be interested in the Orioles, but two days before pitchers and catchers report to Florida, it appears the Astros have made a bold appearance on Chacon's radar."

---My thoughts: I like the move, particularly if the Astros can't sign a higher caliber starting pitcher, like Lohse or Livan Hernandez (who just signed with the Twins).  Shawn Chacon is a good swing man, who can compete for a No. 5 starting job or work out of the bullpen.  I could see Chris Sampson and Chacon competing for the final rotation spot, with the loser getting a key spot in the bullpen.

Chacon had a decent 95 inning year with the Pirates in 07 and posted a 3.94 ERA (and identical RA rate)with 7.2 K/G.  He had a terrible 06, but was plagued by injury; he had arthroscopic surgery on his knee at the end of that season. His best season was 2005, when he posted a 2.85 ERA with the Yankees (an ERA+ over 140)and started a game in the ALDS.  He isn't a great pitcher, but he isn't bad either.

If the Astros can't improve the middle of the rotation, the next best thing is to improve the depth at the bottom of the rotation.

We'll see what happens.

I certrainly like the idea of adding depth
both in the rotation and the bullpen.  i don't know a WHOLE lot about Chacon, and he wasn't somebody that was on my radar over the offseason, but depending on the contract, he appears to be a low-risk, medium-reward proposition.  his career numbers aren't very impressive and he's really only had one good year.  his combined ERA for 2005 (between Colorado and NY) was 3.44 over 151.2 innings.  his combined WHIP was 1.33.  i think we'd all rejoice if we got that line from any pitcher not named Roy Oswalt.  his numbers and age are comparable to Geoff Geary and Chad Paronto, so at least you'd like to think he increases the odds of having multiple semi-reliable arms in the bullpen.

unless it's a stupid contract, i think i've convinced myself that i like this deal.  i would have liked Hernandez better, i think, but whatever.

I don't want to overstate...
the case for signing Chacon, since he is a journeyman pitcher.  But his career stats look a lot worse due to a terrible 2006, when he was injured, and because he pitched most of his career at Coors Field. Going to Baseball-Reference.com, we can neutralize his stats for ballpark effect. His career stats, on a neutralized basis: 4.12 ERA and 1.35 WHIP.  That's pretty good and, in fact, similar to a guy like Lieber.  Because of the Coors effect, it may seem like he has only had one good year.  But, looking at B-Ref's ERA+, Chacon had an ERA+ over 100 (i.e., above average) in 4 of his 7 big league seasons.  Chacon has also been a closer during his career, so he can be pretty useful in the bullpen if he isn't needed in the rotation.

I'm going to go on record...
even before this (potential) signing, and say that the rotation is going to be much better than it seems a lot of people expect.  No, I don't have any numbers, stats or sabermetrics to back that up.  Just a good ol' fashioned gut feeling.

Plus, when you (as a starting pitcher) know you can give up 3 or 4 runs and still win with the lineup that Wade has put together, I think it'll help the starters not named Oswalt relax and pound the strike zone.

Call me out if at the end of the season I look like an idiot.  But I'm going on record.

I'm walking that fine line between bravery and stupidity... but that's the fun part, eh?

I actually agree with you
I don't think we're going to be all that bad off... but we'll see.

Our Starter's ERA last year
was 4.71.  i'll go ahead and say with confidence that we're going to finish 2008 better than that.  Albers and JJ combined for 36 starts and 191 IP, with a 6.08 ERA.  The guys that pitched for us last year that will be competing for starts combined for an ERA of 4.16, which would have been good for 2nd in the league (San Diego's starters' ERA was 4.11).

I'm not saying that we're going to be one of the top rotations in the league, but so long as we have the depth to avoid letting dead weight like we had last year drag us down, I think we'll be better than people think.  Combine that with the fact that we were 13th in the NL in runs scored and 14th in Relievers' ERA, both of which likely will improve, and maybe just maybe, we won't suck like all the pundits think we will.

Why are we excited?
The man has a life time E.R.A. of 4.98.  I feel as if the entire bull pen excluding Roy O. is suspect. Period.  I hope we have enough bats to cover up the 6 runs a night that we are going to give up. I think Ed is admitting with this signing that the pitching staff is the hole in the team.  He is trying to get enough people for Coop to look at that maybe he can duct tape a pitching staff together.  This reminds me of the movie Major League.  A bunch of has beens, almost maybes, never will bes and who's thats.  With that said I am gunna strap on my Stros gear and root like hell for our team.

Umm..
Didn't the Indians in major league make it to the World Series?

Kidding obviously...  But all we can do is root(well, and complain.. which I'm sure I'll do my fair share of both).

If Chacon can repeat that 2.85 ERA
I'll give him a "great" label.

For those that haven't heard yet
the Astros won their arb hearing with Valverde.

No hard feelings, right Jose?

$1.5 million saved.  We'll see how it goes with Loretta next week.

Good
I usually pull for the worker against the bosses, but his demand sounded out of line.

hopefully
He won't feel like he's being robbed and pull the "How am I supposed to support my family on this pitiful salary" case and pitch shitty.  Although, if he does have another year like last year, I would be willing to pay him more than he asked for this year.
