Game Hero, 59 - 74

Roy Oswalt

  • W, 14 - 6
  • 7 IP, 0 ER, 9 K, 0 BB
  • Sixth straight winning decision
  • Ties season- and club-high with 78 Game Score
  • 2.32 Post All-Star ERA, 45:11Post All-Star K/BB
  • RBI single, too, he does it all
  • .342 Total WPA

Since getting wasted in Chicago July 14th in his first start after the All-Star Game, Oswalt is 6 - 0 with a hold and a 1.00 ERA.

I remember that after a lukewarm first half in '05, Andy Pettitte was sheer dominance the rest of the way, and us fans had invented the hypothetical "Second Half Cy," and I'd like to officially nominate Roy for that one this year.

Roy is
pitching like he did when he first came up, and that is a great thing. He is getting strikeouts now, and has stopped that whole "let's pitch to contact when we can't play defense at all, and sacrifice your strikeouts" idea by Garner and Wallace earlier in the year. Strangely enough, Roys best pitch per inning games have been in his higher strikeout games. Also, his career K-to-BB ratio has been about 3.5:1 and earlier this year, during the pitch to contact heyday, it was at 2:1. All signs point to a rebirht of Roy after his terrible outing in Chicago. Arguably if he did not get hurt he might have thrown a complete game SO is SD last time out. He is pitching like an he's used to now after a questionable first half. The worst part is though, he could very easily have 17 wins. He came one out away from a W last time, and Lidge blew opening day, and another game against Oakland, and I think Qualls blew his gem against SF when he dueled Lincecum. Anyway, even good bullpens aren't perfect, but if Roy was 17-6 right now, we should just give him the Cy. Good news is that he was 5-0 in September last year, maybe he can repeat that.

Anyway, I've babbled too much, but here's just wanting to wish Roy a happy 30th, and to congratulate him for pitching like he did when he was 25.

My Math has failed me as I advance in age
If the BP was perfect Oswalt would be 18-6. That would be two more wins than anyone is baseball, and also basically guarantee him 20 wins. Damn, why couldn't our bullpenn be a little bit better. I don't think anyone has been snakebitten more times by a cruddy bullpenn then Oswalt in the last 2 years.

He's Still Pitching To Contact, To A Degree
His numbers since Chicago are sick-good, yet the WHIP over that time is only 1.20, not bad to be sure, but telling, especially when you consider he's given up no walks three or four times.

His WHIP has always
been high for a pitcher of his caliber. He always has seemed to give up a lot of hits, almost a hit per inning, throughout his career, which is strange since he still has posted great career ERA numbers. That is why it is ludicrous for him to, knowing that he gives up hits becuase he challenges people to hit his fastball so much, to pitch to contact even more, especially with a suspect defense in the infield without Everett.

I think Roger
May have gotten bit just as often as Roy.  Of course neither the bats or the bullpen seemed to like Roger very much.
I am officially announcing my candidacy for the position of Astros GM.

Roger was probably more the bats
The team just did not score at all for Roger. For roy they do score, but Lidge seems to blow his saves always. I remember a game last year in Chicago when Roy left with like a 9-3 lead, and the Bullpen blew it, when Iguchi hit a grand slam. Similiar scenarios just seem to happen for Roy.

Honorable Mention
Goes to the Cardinal's defense.  Thank you for helping us win.  (ok, maybe Berkman, too.)
Look on the bright side, Ausmus got us Loretta.
