Astros @ Pirates
Woody Williams VS Shane Youman
Woody Williams Shane Youman
4 - 11, 5.37 2 - 1, 4.24

Well if there is one good thing to take out of this series, it's that we broke the 6 game losing streak against the Pirates on Friday winning 2-1. But then again, last night we lost 3-7 with our hottest pitcher on the hill in Wandy Rodriguez. Today we send our potential 20 game loser in Woody Williams to face off with rookie Shane Youman who's made a total of 6 career starts.

Big Puma isn't going to start today for his 3rd straight game in a row. He was scheduled to sit Friday and Saturday and face struggling righty John Van Benschoten today, but the Pirates chose to throw Youman today who is a lefty, so it gives the Astros a good excuse to let Lance rest his annoying left hand bruise(which he has now named "George").

Lance Berkman has given the bruise on his left hand a name -- George. And according to Berkman, George isn't as bothersome as he has been in the past few days.

"It's just a big knot," Berkman said. "And it's 'knot' going away."
From here.

Hopefully "George" will go away so we can see Lance back in the lineup on Monday when we come home to face the Dodgers.

Was just thinking...
I wonder if there is another team in baseball with as many platoon's as we have?

We have platoon's at RF, 3B, SS, 2B, 1st(sometimes) and C.

I'm sure some of you agree(as well as some totally disagree) that a platoon in any position is a BAD decision 90% of the time... I don't think it's good for anyone.

And fans and columnists
say Astros should acquire a centerfielder (one of two regular positions where Astros do not platoon, yet)

Plus the supposedly number 1 right fielder probably has the third or fourth most playing time there.

I Definitely
disagree with your broad assertion about platoons being bad in general.

Some guys can't hit lefties, it's a fact.

But on the other hand, Garner appears to be trying to fit the square peg in the round hole, insisting on platoons where none are necessary.

I think the right field
Luke Scott- Jason Lane- Lance Berkman -Orlando Palmeiro -Chris Burke has been a bad idea and has has messed up Jason Lane and Luke Scott - may have ruined their careers; and it has not helped the Astros. That righty lefty thing has been a disaster.

Burke in right ; Loretta batting third
Borrowing from Tim Purpura again, "It was totally unexpected."

Phil Garner must not have watched last night's game or any game with Loetta batting third.

Oh no - Pence's arm looks bad
Hunter Pence cannot hold the bat all the way through his swing; or swing it as he runs to first. No way he'll be able to make a throw in center; and batting looks like it aggravates the injury.

On the other hand, maybe I'm overreacting.

but I'd take him out anyway

Chris Burke started the game
with a lead off out.

We need Rastro to compare Burke's first at-bats when he leads off to Biggio's first at-bats when he leads off.

Also how each does with at least two men on 2 outs.

Neither very good
I have no reason, no data and no hunch to believe this, but I presume the "typical" lead-off hitter is more a .280 average, .350 OBP on  first at-bats?

Looks like Mark Loretta no better at lead off than he is in the third slot.

Orlando Palmeiro looks the most promising, but his sample is so small that no fair conclusion can be made. Now here's an interesting strategy: Bat Orlando Palmeiro first, then replace him in the bottom of the first (or top of the second if the team is at home).

Esberg and Lamb just don't fit there.

Thanks for the data.

by Joe in Birmingham on Jul 22, 2007 4:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Should Have Said
That of Biggio's 15 hits, 5 were doubles, and 2 were homers.

Burke's hits were both for extra bases:  a double and a triple.

Biggio has hit .150 (3/20) with 2 outs and at least two men on.

Burke has hit .154 (2/13).

Hard to imagine....
that any other teams in baseball have a worse composite line for batting average and OBP out of the lead off spot.

Brad Ausmus
leans way in Pirates dugout to catch a foul that many players would have given up on. he had to catchit on the tipof his mitt and flip it up to get more solid grip on it.

Since Pirates had men on first and second at the time, that ranks as a major play of the day.

by Joe in Birmingham on Jul 22, 2007 1:38 PM CDT reply actions

The Pirates Broadcast
showed ity several times, and I enjoyed watching it every time.

But don't know how major it was, considering that Youman was the batter.  It's likely Woody would have gotten him even if Ausmus had given up on the ball.

On what should have been a base hit by Woody through the middle, Izturis makes a play about 15' on the 2nd base side of 2nd base to throw out Woody.

Another great play
Newly acquired Pirates shortstop Cesar Izturis goes about two steps past second to nab a Woody Williams grounder. He had a litle head start since Asumus who had singled was on his way to second on a hit and run, and Izturis was moving to cover second

Great play WOODY!!!!!!!!!!
Woody Williams went sprawling toward third base line to pull in a tricky dribble-bouncer(?) and on his side slung the ball on one bounce to Mike Lamb at first to end the inning. Nice play by Mike Lamb on the receiving end, too.

Props to Woody Williams' Pitching today
Besides his fielding prowess and being robbed of a critical hit, Woody has pitched six scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits and striking out 2 while not walking anybody.

On platoons...
I view platoons as very smart tools for a manager, because it enables a team to convert two mediocre players into a single good player at a position.  The Hardball Times has a multi-part series of articles on the best platoons of each era...and it really shows how the practice has been used well for almost as long as baseball has been played. (My favorite platoon: McCovey, the lefty, and Cepeda, the righty, in their first couple of ML seasons...that is a scary slugging combination.) The fact that the Astros have so many platoons is more of a commentary on the fact that the Astros have so many flawed players.  If Lamb could play defense or Ensberg could hit better, there would be question about a full time 3d baseman, for instance. I have advocated playing Scott full time, mostly to see what his future role should be, but I wouldn't argue that his performance has justified a full time role either.

Woody...
he is pitching a beauty of a game here in the 8th. Anyone think he can pitch another complete game?

By the way, sorry I didn't place my post on platoon next the discussion earlier in the thread...I didn't think about the location when I wrote it.

91 pitches
through 8 innings. Two hard hit balls in the 8th though.

We'll see if he comes out for the ninth. Not sure I trust anyone else anymore than Woody at this point.

Given the record this season, why not give Woody the opportunity at a complete game?

But Lidge comes in....

Woody Williams - fielding star
Another stellar catch by Woody Williams -this time in part a matter of self-preservation as he catches screamer back to mound.

AS I typed this the crowd roared as a Pittsburgh batter hit long warning track fly for out three.

Wish we had more posters today. Woody deserves  more compliments than two of us have been able to give him.

Nady went down...
with 2 checked swing strike calls which easily could have been called the other way.  Lidge gets so many checked swings that one could say that his success often rides on how umpires call those swings...maybe it's just me, but checked swing calls are among the most inconsistent in baseball.

by clack on Jul 22, 2007 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions

LOL (okay - ony a smile and nod)
Brad Lidge on radio says sometimes he gets those check swings sometimes he doesn't. "It depends on the umpire!"

Back to me now - I  didn't think that last one was a swing. Radio guys said the batter didn't think so, either.

At least it went Astros way

by Joe in Birmingham on Jul 22, 2007 2:57 PM CDT up reply actions

When Lidge struggled...
to close games, he wouldn't get those big strike outs.  It would seem that batters would just "half swing" and check it when the slider bounced in.  Who knows how the course of his struggles might have changed if he had more favorable calls by the umps in those situations.  However, he clearly has better control right now than he did during the period in which he struggled...I wouldn't be surprised if that influences the umpires to give him a few more of those calls.

by clack on Jul 22, 2007 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe
but wasn't that last pitch of the game six to inches off the plate and in the dirt; plus a wild pitch earlier in the at-bat showed some loss of control with a runner on base.

I'm just hoping Brad Lidge gets his reputation (and performance) back.

by Joe in Birmingham on Jul 22, 2007 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Hell of a game overall..
well.. besides our offense just barely doing enough for us to get a win.

Woody was great and Lidge was(well minus the hit) unhittable.

Pence says
he expects to be back for the Dodgers' series.  However, the Astros need to sit him down if there is any chance that he could aggravate the injury.  Wrist injuries can be difficult, chronic problems for hitters.

bobblehead nighti n Pittsburgh
I saw this Astros-related entry on the Pirates "Buc Dugout". They have a picture to go along with the story but the picture didn't make here.:

What a night.

I went to the Pirate game Saturday with my brother and a couple of friends.  We all have bobblehead plans, and tonight (80s and 90s logo man night) was the last game on the plan.

We went down real early for batting practice.  My brother and his friend went down to the right field corner (near the handicap seats) and watched the Astros relievers warming up.  Of course they were being peppered left and right by kids demanding balls.

My brother's friend decided to get a leg up.

Friend-"Hey Lidge!!  I'll give you this bobblehead for a ball!!!"

Lidge-walks over. "That sounds like a decent deal"

The trade takes place, and Lidge proceeds to place the bobblehead and his water on the ground.  It remains there for a good 10 minutes.  Then the players went further into the outfield for windsprints.  Just before though, Lidge was kind enough to pose with the bobblehead.  Lidge then took it out furthur in the OF and set it down again, and started talking to other team mates.

After another 10 minutes or so, Lance Berkman comes trotting out to chat.  He talks to a few relievers, who point at the bobblehead box, and then over at us.  Berkman laughs, and grabs the box, and throws it, then picks it back up, removes the bobblehead, and throws it.

Next, the relievers, led by Chad Qualls, start throwing balls at it.  The logo man managed to dodge most of the projectiles.

Later on, Lidge returns, and asks where his bobblehead is.  Berkman walks over, picks it up, puts it back in the box, and hands it to Lidge, and points at Qualls, as if to blame him for the mess.

Just a few minutes later, Qualls knocks the box out of Lidge's hand and again chucks it.

Finally, BP ends, but before they leave the field, they remove the bobblehead from the box and set it on top of the box, and leave it in right.

It remained there until about 10 minutes before the lineups were announced.

How funny is that?

Adam

Rough Sledding Ahead
Not to throw cold water on anybody's enthusiasm but look at the Astros upcoming opponents for the next four weeks:

Los Angeles Dodgers (3)
San Diego Padres (4)

Atlanta Braves (3)
Florida Marlins (3)

Chicago Cubs (3)
Milwaukee Brewers(3)

Los Angeles Dodgers (4)
San Diego Padres(3)

This could be a long-drawn-out ugly (and Roy Oswalt misses at least one start with that rib inflamation)

On the other hand, an 18-8 run could really boost morale.
