| Wandy Rodriguez | Chris Capuano |
| 0 - 1, 2.77 | 2 - 0, 2.81 |
Last night, as was proper, I wrote a little something about Craig Biggio. That # 7 hit his third career grand slam was news. That Brad Lidge struggled again was not.
And we won the game, after all. Bitching and moaning about bullpen use wouldn't have seemed fitting.
But now that I've got the Biggio tribute out of the way, and before I begin waving my Magic Wandy, I'd like to maybe make a point.
The Brewers countered in the ninth against Lidge. Because Dan Wheeler had thrown three innings over the previous two nights and Chad Qualls had thrown in eight of the Astros' previous 14 games, Garner wanted to use Lidge in a non-save situation to spare Wheeler and Qualls.OK, so Garner wanted to get through the ninth without using the back end of the pen, because Qualls and Wheeler had been used so much lately.---
From JJO's Game Story
While that doesn't explain why Borkowski or Moehler weren't throwing as Lidge took the mound to begin the ninth inning, it almost sounds reasonable.
But why, may I ask, had Wheeler in particular thrown so many innings over the last two nights? Well, he had a save against the Reds Thursday, but (and here's my point, in case you were looking for it) also because Wheels threw two needless innings Wednesday.
If you recall or even if you don't, Garner's use of Wheeler in the ninth of the first game against Cincy induced panic attacks in me. You've only got so many innings you can get from your closer, and it seemed silly to waste one of those innings when a lesser pitcher could get through.
Later on KE2117 tried to calm me down by saying "when wheeler started the inning, jd just said he hadnt pitched since 4/13 so he would probably pitch the 8th and the 9th" and that mollified me at the time, but looking back now, the whole strategy seems as stupid as it did at the time.
Think back to how you felt last night as Lidge walked the first two guys, and you realized that not only wasn't Wheeler available, no-one had even gotten up in the pen. If Wheeler hadn't thrown two innings Wednesday, the nausea we felt could have been abated by the knowledge that worst comes to worst we've got Wheeler in the hole.
Instead, it was too much Lidge and then Trever Miller--to face a righty! It was a crisis, yes, and it was a crisis of Garner's own making. If Qualls had given up a 3 - 1 single up the middle to Gross, the Brewers would have tied it, and you know the Astros would have had no shot after that. And it would have all been Garner's fault.
Garner's. Not Lidge's.
Fluky singles happen all the time; how did Garner let it get to that point?
For the most part I'm not one to snipe at this decision or the other, because hindsight gives me a rather unfair advantage. But sometimes I really think Garner's management of the bullpen is just really, really poor.
So we go for nine of ten tonight. The team's been really playing well, and really getting lucky, too. It's OK to admit it: a little luck is the only way any team wins 8 of 9. There's no shame in it.
I think of Sampson on Wednesday, who left way too many balls up in the zone, but saw the Reds extract only very little payment for his mistakes. And I think of Albers, who was gutsy, but had runners all over the place, who stranded three runners at third in six innings.
So maybe some of this luck we've been pitching in will rub off on Wandy, who sometimes sucks, it is true, but who also often seems as if he can't catch a freaking break from the umpire or from his fielders.
Well, he gets all that run support, but I think you know what I mean.
Anyway, nothing more to say but Wandy Power™!

If it's a lefty they're facing, then it's Burke number two and Ensberg five and Lane six. Since Burke is OBPing .350 and Bidge is OBPing .275, I wonder on days when Burke is going to be batting up in the order anyway, he mightn't be best placed leading off.
But maybe that's non-negotiable, if you know what I'm saying.

In on his hands, and grounded to Bidge, who's a little clumsy transferring as he goes to Everett covering at second. Everett doesn't even try a throw.
But the Brewers are just a little slower on the basepaths with two away.

I've Really Had No Issues
I certainly don't think that he should have lifted him after 4, that'd a been stupid
then he gave up three in the sixth, and by then, the game is lost so wjhy waste your bullpen?
I also think he's thrown the ball pretty well. Seven k's gives you an idea of that. The worst thing I can say about him tonight is that he's done a poor job controlling his baserunners.

We're used to our shortstop ranging all over the freaking place, but to others it must seem a little weird.
If anything, Adam was on the right side of the second baseman's bag when he made the catch, and probably forty feet behind it.

I dunno, it just seems funny to me.

Top Eight
Lane first up, he's 0 for 2 lifetime vs. Turnbow.
Count is even at 2, Jason checked his swing on a slider low.
Fastball high fills it.
Missed away, and a nice walk taken by Lane.
Turnbow does appear formidably nasty, see if we can get Lane around.
Everett
Fastball strike on the corner.
Fastball in on Adam's hands is fouled back.
Couple more fouls, Adam stays alive anyway.
Back door breaking ball doesn't break, 2 - 2 good AB for Adam so far.
Reaches at something he probably shouldn't have.
Lane out at second, but Everett beats the relay.

Burke with another two hit night tonight, but if only for the platoon split, I'm Ok with this move.
Luke also has more power of course.
Back up slider is called and it's 2 - 2.

Count is even to Berkman. Slider in on him is swung over.
Berkman's come close a few times tonight, one last chance to connect for true,
next pitch is down count even at 2.
Inside, full count. A walk wouldn't make me all that happy, as I'd think a lefty would have a better look at that slider.

well played
Lee shows game after game what a good pick up he was. I've always felt he was undervalued, much akin to Berkman. The guy shows extraordinary talent at the plate, especially w/ two strikes on him... too bad he only had one on him in the 9th when he grounded out.
Can we please send Wandy to Round Rock...errrrr Corpus? I was sickened w/ him a loooong time ago and now...well I feel exactly the same.
P.S. Gar, let the washed-up, scruffy Woodpecker fly the coop as well.
the knws post game show had
he seems like he'd be more on the left,
Umm, no ida what Ausmus is
Wandy had 7 K's in 6 IP
I think some of rastro's comments in the game thread may go to why this seems to be the case for Wandy. He seems to have difficulty controlling his emotions when things go bad, and then makes a mistake. I mean, there is no excuse for a lefthanded pitcher allowing baserunners to manufacture runs.
FWIW, Ausmus said Wandy main problem today is that he didn't have command of the two seam FB. He seems to think that is just an aberration, and Wandy will bounce back. Ausmus said he HAS to bounce back, because the Astros are depending on Wandy having a good season.
You want to know what Wandy's problem is?
Call Me A Wandy Apologist Now
The question (and the trap) is can those mistakes be reduced?
To extend the theme I touched on in the pregame, I think that Wandy pitched better than his results, while Sampson and Albers (especially Albers) both recently got better results than the way they pitched necessarily warranted.
Putting Hardy aside for the moment, the two biggest hits of the game were the Weeks bloop double and the Hart bunt base hit.
Try as you might to deny it, bad luck had something to do with that sixspot he put up.
Shamus has suggested a couple times that Lidge was simply born under a bad sign; I might suggest that this is more true of Wandy.
And not to excuse a big fat petulant lollipop he left up for Hardy after the Weeks thing, but the Brewers's shortstop is kind of hot, having homered against Zach Duke and Albers on successive days before facing Wandy.
It has also been suggested that Lidge should see (or is seeing) a sports psychologist. Similarly, I feel Wandy needs one more than Bradley. Wandy's reactions to adversity are clearly self-defeating. Those kinds of attitudes can be changed with work.
Back to Albers and Sampson and away from the pop psychology: if you look at things task-based, I'd say Matt and Chris have at least as much to work on before their next start as Wandy does about his (holding baserunners, anyone?)
Lastly, note that Wandy currently has a 1.26 WHIP and an 8.05 k/9. Compare Oswalt (3 - 0) at 1.21 and 6.43.
