Hunter Pence Slumping

Yes it's true... he's slumping. I'm sure it's hard for him to take too... I mean his batting average is under .700 now and bordering the .600 mark. I'm not really sure how he can live with himself. Only 14 hits out of 22 at bats... pathetic.

Word is that Pence is still going to be sent down when the time comes and that Burke is guaranteed the starting spot (heard it from Timmy P on the radio). Tim basically said that he couldn't live with himself if he didn't give Chris the starting job. Oh well. . . I can't fault him for it. . . I am a big Burke fan. But I do still think that there is a player on the team that is expendable that is basically guaranteed a spot on the roster. Sorry to say it, but it's Orlando Palmeiro. I like Orlando and think he did well last year (especially during the run at the end of the season where he had multiple crucial hits), but he is a bench player and a pinch hitter. That is all.

He doesn't have power and he's not an RBI guy. He's a singles guy who very seldom misses when he swings. I mean he was only a .252 hitter last year. I know he has a contract for this year, but I'd still rather eat the money on his contract and give Pence a chance than to not give Pence the chance. I know Pence needs to play... but I think the Astros could give him some playing time... at least in a pinch hitting role.

On a lighter note The Astros get to go to Disney World today and they have their ace Roy Oswalt taking the hill against the Braves' who send Tim Hudson. The game starts at 6:05 p.m.

Hunter will start the year at AAA.
He needs playing time and lots of it.  A pinch hitting role isn't going to give him PT.  I see him as the first call up after injury or struggles by any outfielder.

Give Pence a chance to what?
sit on the bench and get 3-4 AB's a week?  that's the job he'd be taking from OP.  if he's not the starting RF or CF, he'll be the starting CF for Round Rock.

Pence & Burke
Three questions for the opening day CF dilemma:
  1.  What makes the team better in 2007?  Burke with 300 ABs and Pence with 500 ABs?  Or Burke with 500 ABs and Pence with 0 (he won't be a bench player)?
  2.  What makes the team better in 2008?  Burke coming into the season with 1000 MLB ABs and Pence coming in with 500 MLB ABs?  Or Burke coming in with  1200 ABs and Pence coming in with 0 ABs?
  3. Over the long term what makes Burke and Pence better individually?  Burke getting 500 MLB ABs and Pence getting 500 AAA ABs?  Or Burke getting 300 MLB ABs and Pence getting 500 MLB ABs?
I think 1 and 2 are best served by Pence playing.  If you think 3 means AAA for Pence, then that may trump 1 and 2.  If you think Pence can handle the bigs and Burke will be fine at 2b in the future without playing CF everyday in 2007, you've gotta do what helps the team the most in 2007 and 2008, whatever you determine that to be.

so who gets axed
and what do you do if Pence is struggling at the beginning of the season (ala Luke Scott 2005)?

does anyone know how many
spring training games will be televised for the astros?

Not counting today,
on FSN you'll have the 21st and 24th, and on MLB.TV you have the 21st, 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 30th.

I predict Hunter will...
...start at Round Rock and be up with the team by, oh, May 23rd, playing either right or center -- whereever someone is tanking.  I think Hunter having 150-200 AAA at bats during the first 6-8 weeks of the season is better for Hunter than him having 30-35 MLB at bats during that period.

I agree with Tim and Gar on this one.  IF they are going with Burke in center, Hunter needs to play every day.  IF Burke tanks in center, either offensively or defensively, bring the kid up!

Tanking
He's going to have to tank defensively since his .057 BA in Spring Training is not making Garner sweat; at least in public statements.

Could it be Burke has enough MLB film on him now for people to be placing their pitches? Like with Ensberg & Lane always getting High Heat?

Pense is rocking in Spring Training and Conrad is doing well too. Maybe Burke, while a feel good choice, is NOT better than sliced bread.

Let me be the latest knucklehead
to say that I believe Hunter Pence should start in CF this season.

Burke looks, to my humble eye, like his swing has some kind of a serious flaw, that he's coming in late on everything and leaving the bat on his shoulder.  Spring training timing problem? Maybe, but I've always had an inkling that his swing is a bit slow (heroic home runs excepted).

And quite simply, Pence is a ballplayer.  He's unconventional in his presentation, but he puts the bat head on the ball and runs around like a madman.  That is who I want in center field for the big club, not a Biggio II out there.

That said, I think Burke (obviously) has a position waiting for him when Bidge moves on after 3000.  I have no problem letting him sit around for a bit until that time comes, pinch-hitting or what-have-you.

If it's Pence as a bench-player instead of Palmeiro, I say send Pence back to AAA.  But I would like to see him starting in centerfield, and if he bombs, go right back to Burke without any worries.

it's that last sentence
that nobody seems to dwell on.  if Lane and Bruntlett can clear waivers and be sitting in Round Rock waiting for their call-up, maybe it's a non-issue, but with Pence getting a roster spot, somebody will have to go, and if he tanks or even struggles a little, where does that leave us?

he didn't hit .600 in AA last year.  he did well for sure, but it's not like he's been the second coming of Ted Williams his entire minor league career.  it makes the most sense to start him at AAA and not sacrifice any known commodities to give him his shot right out of the gate.  i don't think anybody thinks that he's not going to make his major league debut this year.  most just think it won't be on opening day.
