Carlos Lee Wins Silver Slugger
Of course, they picked two left-fielders and no right-fielder, but if it works for the All-Star Game, then it should work for the Silver Slugger, too, huh?
Also notable is David Wright, who had to be considered a shoo-in for the Silver Slugger, once we had the unbelievable news that he'd actually been given the Gold Glove.
But I digress, and back to Caballo: ultra-prestigious or not, perhaps the piece of hardware given Carlito will convince Phil Rogers that Lee did in fact help the Astros win more than a game or two last season.
Just off the top of my head, I know Lee had two walkoff homers and a three-homer game in 2007. I'm down with Rogers' contention that the Astros need to focus on rebuilding, but his statement that Lee "piled up impressive statistics but rarely won games for his team" is flat out stupid.

Phil Rogers...
Woot! EL CABALLO!!!
I noticed on BBTF's
Yeah!
Call me old fashioned (and I know you will) but I kind of think the Silver Slugger should go the best hitter at each position. You know, who hits the ball the best.
Although Dunn was better in 2007, and actually had a respectable batting average for a change, he struck out 100 times more than Lee, and a goodly percentage of his offensive value came from the walk, which like the k, does not involve actually hitting the baseball.
I won't deny Dunn has value, but he's not a Silver Slugger, and my guess is he never will be.

Chipper Jones is...
Chipper said he wouldn't complain if Feliz or Aramis Ramirez had won the Gold Glove. I agree with him there. Pedro Feliz should have won the GG, IMO. He had the best fielding percent and the best revized zone rating...and most other defensive metric systems confirm that his range is top rate. (Feliz won the Fielding Bible's Golden Glove at 3d base for both leagues.) Aramis Ramirez and Ryan Zimmerman wouldn't have been bad choices either, given their revised zone rating. It is interesting that A-Ram, who had a richly deserved reputation as a defensive butcher at one time, has now become a very good defensive 3d baseman.
Why did Wright win it? Is this an example of offensive stats influencing the Gold Glove award?
