Matchup/Game Thread Game # 119 vs. Cubs

Juan Mateo Roger Clemens
1 - 0, 2.57 4 - 4, 2.24

As Roger Clemens prepares to make his eleventh start of the year, I was alerted to a story on his son Koby, who's struggling a bit more at Single A Lexington in 2006 than he did at Greeneville in 2005.

After working through a hand injury earlier in the year, the younger Clemens has settled into the .230's average-wise, and has made fifteen errors. Most of his other numbers are equally unimpressive.

The Philadelphia Inquirer posted an update on Koby yesterday that may be helpful if you're like me and haven't paid enough attention to the minors this year. First, Clemens wasn't a prospect and his selection was a vanity pick for his father. Then, he WAS a prospect after excelling at Rookie Greeneville. And now, it seems maybe they were right in the first place.

Also in minor league news, Koby Clemens' own Lexington Legends became the second Astro affiliate this year to get no-hit on Sunday, as the Lakewood Blueclaws did the dastardly deed unto the Legends. You can read more about it from the point of view of the Legends here.

You may recall that the Carolina League Frederick Keys no-hit our Salem Avalanche on April 12.

It's kind of ironic that during a wildly successful year for the farm clubs--where it looks like five of the six affiliated clubs will make the playoffs--not just one but two of our minor league clubs have found themselves completely stymied for at least one day.

Though let's face it, I can deal with it at the minor league level. I'm just thankful Carlos Zambrano or someone of similar ilk hasn't tossed the no-no at the anemic major league club. . . . although I half expect newbie Juan Mateo to take another serious crack at it tonight.

If you come here, you undoubtedly know that Willy's 17-game hit streak is the longest current streak in the majors.

You're also probably not much in the mood to forgive Morgan for the execrable game he had last night, although it was an 11-game onbase streak that was broken byh the 0 for 4.

Garner wasn't in a forgiving mood, either, evidently.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:08 PM CDT reply actions

Indeed
"Execrable" is the perfect descriptor.  And it's difficult, for me at least, to be very forgiving when he basically lied about being injured earlier this season (no matter how honorably motivated).  When he slumps, he will forever be dogged by questions about his health.

Unfortunately, since I suspect most of his issues are mental, sitting him will probably serve to exacerbate the execrableness.

by Danyah on Aug 15, 2006 7:15 PM CDT reply actions

I'd Rather
my third baseman "terminate the terrible" than "exacerbate the execrableness."

But then again, we rarely have a choice.

Top First
A rude welcome for Roger by Pierre, who triples to right on the thrid pitch of the game, yikes.

Izturis singles to center, and Cubs lead 1 - 0.

Cubs looking for speed, not power, evidently.  Angel Pagan hitting third?  He grounds to Bidge and Izturis moves to second.

Ramirez takes a first pitch ball, but ends up striking out swinging

Jacque Jones is HBP, ball was more behind him than in front.  If it's a message it's a worrisome one.

Mabry K's and that's all she wrote.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:16 PM CDT reply actions

Bottom First
Willy singles on a 1 - 2 pitch, look at that.

Biggio has a long at bat and hammers a hanging breaking ball but it stays on and Pierre gloves it for the out.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:21 PM CDT reply actions

Lamb
a little nubber to the first base side of the mound.  Mateo retrieves and throws on to Mabryfor the out.

Willy T to second.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Top Two
Clemens ain't fooling the Cubs' leadoff batters:  Cedeno homers to the Crawfish Boxes, and it 's 2 - 0

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:28 PM CDT reply actions

Blanco
very deep in the hole, almost an impossible play but since it's the catcher, Adam takes a crack at it.
The throw pulls Lamb off the bag, and was probably late anyway.

But the attempt was real pretty, yu should have seen it.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Mateo
sacs Blanco to second with a workmanlike bunt.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Pierre
grounds to Bidge on a 1 - 2 count.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Izturis
grounds to Bidge and Blanco is stranded.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom Two
Scott singles, average up to .430, 37 for 86, my goodness

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:38 PM CDT reply actions

Huff
flies to Pierre, although CBS Sportsline tells me he singled.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Everett
pops to Ramirez in foul ground.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Ausmus
OK, I still don;t understand why you couldn't have bunt with Ausmus and then had Roy swinging in the sixth yesterday.

JD and Brownie make it sound as if it's self-evident that you couldn't keep Roy in the game after bunting with Ausmus, but I don't see it.

What if your major imperative was to avoid the double play?

Ausmus flies to deep right, and it's Pierre who catches it.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions

I say
Luuuuke for ROTY!  (Hey, Ryan Howard was a mid-season call-up, so if Scott can keep up this pace, I say why not?)

by Danyah on Aug 15, 2006 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Top Three
Pagan grounds to Lamb off the bag, but he's too far so he has to toss to Clemens, who's in a footrace to first.

Clemens wins.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:47 PM CDT reply actions

Ramirez
goes to a full count before swinging through a fastball.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Jacque Jones
screwball looking thing breaking away from the left handed Jones makes him look silly.

He lines to center, but an onrushing Willy is there.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom Three
Rocket grounds to short.

Where's that clutch-hitting Rocket we knew last year?

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:54 PM CDT reply actions

Willy T
ohfer four the rest of the way?

Kind of been the pattern lately.

Little looper off the bat makes a bid to get past Cedeño, but he dives and gloves it.  After having three straight multi-hit games, he's had just the one hit in 6 of the last seven games.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Top Four
Mabry singles, little looper drops in front of Berkman

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:00 PM CDT reply actions

Cedeno
bunts Mabry to second.

Real languid vibe to this game that's putting me and the crowd to sleep.

Cubs lead feels like it's five runs and the Astros are doing nothing exciting.

It's left to Rocket to maintain his focus, as the rest of us lose it.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Blanco
dives in to slider or a splitter and grounds to Huff

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

"Languid vibe"
Well said.  It seems to feel that way a lot lately, and I'm not sure if it's the team feeding off of the horrible crowds, or vice versa.  I know when I was there Sunday, I was dumbfounded by how slowly Backe worked.  In the words of Berkman, "a human rain delay."  It was excrutiating.

by Danyah on Aug 15, 2006 8:05 PM CDT reply actions

My bad
I really do know how to spell "excruciating."

by Danyah on Aug 15, 2006 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

You Also
know to say "my error," or "my mistake."

:-)

(Sorry about that, but 'my bad' is a personal peccadillo.  As expressions go, it's . . .execrable!)

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom Four
singles up the middle, a compoarative explosive fireball of excitement

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:12 PM CDT reply actions

Berkman
Stifle the yawn; Lance walks.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Luke
flies to deep left center, but Pagan snares it.

Lamb takes third while Lance holds with the throw coming in to second.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Huff
Whoa, that was something.  Huff skies it over Pierre's head and it bounces at the foot of Tal's hill and hits the center field wall.

Lamb comes around to score, and then Berkman does too.

Cubs choose not to throw home (which would have been interesting) and hang Huff out to dry .  A short rundown ensues, but Huff is obviously toast.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Everett
grounds to Mabry, and it was like the brief exciting interlude never happened.

Although I guess you still hear buzz-residue from the crowd.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Have you
watched him run?  It's like watching Bert of the Muppets, all weird-awkward elbows flailing and stuff.

His posture bespeaks either a bad back or bad knees, IMO.

by Danyah on Aug 15, 2006 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Ramirez
singles and Pagan goes first to third.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Jones
goes 3 - 1 before homering to dead center.

Dead center.  Willy was racing the ball at the end, hauling ass up the hill, but when he got to the fence, the ball was already bouncing beyond it.

5 - 2 Cubs, and you really don't see Roger do that much:  he had two outs with no-one on, then allows three runs.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Thanks again
for all your hard work.  I am on call this evening and need to call it a night.  Here's hoping they can rally (again!).

by Danyah on Aug 15, 2006 8:32 PM CDT reply actions

Bottom Five
Ausmus up with Borkowski working and Clemens on deck.

Brad flies to Pierre.  <Yawn>

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:33 PM CDT reply actions

Clemens
is hit by pitch.

Funny:  almost certainly intentional, but Clemens didn't even look at Mateo, just took his base.

'Course if Clemens goes into the sixth down three, we''ll see what happens then.

For now, maybe Willy or Craig can get him around.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Taveras
strikes out, first swing was particularly ugly.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Bidge
ends the inning

Sigh, yawn, blah blah, same ol' same ol'

No trace whatsoever of the momentum this club had just three games ago.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Top Six
Clemens has to get Cedeno and Blanco before he faces Mateo.

He gets Cedeno to pop out and Blanco grounded to Adam, but Dusty removes Mateo, and it's Theriot to pinch hit.

Roger misses Theriot on his first pitch but gets him on the second.  Ump gives Clemens a warning, and Roger's OK with that.

'Course now Theriot has got a point to prove, and he takes off.

Brad does his best to satisfy the Astro honor--throw looks like it got Theriot but he is called safe.

With all the honor and duty stuff out of the way, Pierre k's on a foul tip, inning over.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:47 PM CDT reply actions

Bottom Six
Will Ohman in for the Cubs, and his first pitch is inside on Mike Lamb.

But the umpire doesn't react, and Lamb ends up opping to second.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:49 PM CDT reply actions

Lance
flies to the bullpen wall next to the Crawford Boxes, everyone thought it was a homer, including Berkman

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Luke
singles up the middle, Luke is the absolute shit.

2 for 3 tonight

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Huff
now singles, and whaddya know tying run to the plate.

Dusty's seen enough of Ohman, here comes Michael Wuertz

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Everett
Holy shit, baseball's wonderful.  Given the way this game has gone, the LAST thing I expected here was for Everett to hit a two-run triple, but he did.

Looks like Pagan could have caught it had things gone differently, but that just proves my point.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Ausmus
walks on five pitches, here comes Palmeiro, Roger done.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 8:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Palmeiro
takes ball one high and away.

Second pitch isn't high, just away.

Palmeiro lines it down the first base line, and Everett scores easily, and . . . here comes Beetlebaum.

No, no, here comes Ausmus, and the Astros have the lead!

Like Huff before him, Palmeiro is caught in a rundown as the Cubs OF goes to third instead of trying for a play at the plate.

Palmeiro stayed alive a little longer than Huff did though.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Top Seven
Qualls in, and Izturis lines past Scott.  Luke dove and the ball got past him, but Willy was backing up as he should have been and it's only a single.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:06 PM CDT reply actions

Pagan
bounces to Everett who throws on for the FC at second on Izturis, but the throw from Bidge is very late and the double play was not to be.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Ramirez
has a long at bat punctuated by throws to first, but ends up striking out swinging.

Sombrero for Aramis.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Jones
goes 0 - 2 but I won't be able to rest easy until he is retired, as he's been a wrecking crew this evening.

That's a ball and it's 1 - 2 just off the plate, Jones in the zone to take that thing.

Qualls bounces one to even the count.

Now he throws over, thinking maybe he doesn't HAVE to get Jones, maybe he can pick off the runner.

No dice there, so he comes back and get Jones swinging.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom Seven
Now maybe it's just me, but it certainly appeared that Busty Daker pulled Mateo (at 76 pitches)simply so that Clemens couldn't have the satisfaction of hitting him.

Which is a game he can play; certainly Roger was playing a game of his own.

But it sure as hell backfired as the Cubs bullpen couldn't hold the 'Stros down the way Mateo had.

the first entry in the Baseball Encyclopedia, David Aardsma,  in to face Taveras.

Whom he induces to strikeout swinging.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:17 PM CDT reply actions

Bidge
Whoa I did NOT know Aardsma threw 97.

Bidge flies to Pierre on a 2- 2 pitch.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Lamb
will face Eyre, the Cubs fifth pitcher.

And he will strike out looking.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Top Eight
Wheeler in, what is it 8-2/3 consecutive scoreless innings for him?

Mabry hits it to deep center, hits it to Willy at the foot of the hill.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:27 PM CDT reply actions

Cedeno
lines to Lane in right, that's two hard hit balls in the innings.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Blanco
flies to Lance, and that was the softest out of the inning.

they'll all look like tappers back to the mound tomorrow.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom Eight
Eyre still in, Berkman will bat righty.

Flies to Jones on the third pitch.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:32 PM CDT reply actions

Scott
Three hit night as he singles up the middle.

Hitting .438, slugging .685.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Huff
Check swing (no swing!) and it's 3 -1 before he's badly fooled on a change.

Huff grounds up the first base line, and Eyre got hurt trying to get over to cover.

Mabry actually tagged Huff, but he impressed the ump with the elusive slide "a la Jeff Bagwell" as JD says.

Luke to third, and you're always looking for Lidge protection or Lidge insurance, whatever you want to call it.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Everett
Garner called a squeeze, but the Cubs called a pitchout.

Luke did what he could to stay alive, but Huff could only get to second.

Also Everett did what he could, lunging at the ball but no chance.

Crap.

Everett now flies to JP

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Top Nine

Fastbll's high.

Lidge bounces one and here we go, 2 - 2.

Murton homers.

but he cannot keep sending Lidge out there in the 9th. There's just no excuse anymore.

by MG(vers. 2) on Aug 15, 2006 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions

I Like Garner
too, and it was only with great restraint that I held my tongue when jakechap went off on him last night, but he's gotta see the light, and if it means telling Purpura that the big closer contract and his trade chances have to sit, then that's what Phil's got to do.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Nevin
hitting for Howry

Nevein destroyed us last night, what might he do now?

On a one-ball count he hits a SHOT down the third base line, but it's just foul.

Lidge throws over, the same way Qualls did when Qualls was facing Jones, thinking hey!  maybe I DON'T have to retire this guy.

But it's one out Lidge, you do, you do.

He gs over a two more times, now just trying to hold Izturis.  Does it again, and the crowd starts booing, sensing what I do, that Lidge doesn't want to throw to Nevin.

Fould off to the left of the third base bag.

2 - 2 and Nieve is up, probably not soon enough.

Lidge does strike out Nevin, and I am VERY surprised at that.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Ramirez
singles in front of Willy T, Izturis to second.
, just when I am feeling charitable.

But no, Lidge does suck, and Garner removes him for Trever Miller.

I mean come on, by now the joke is not Brad Lidge's pitching, but the fact that the team continues to employ him in the ninth.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Jones
Don't know if I'm soothed by Miller being in here to face Jones, as Jones has been dead on tonight, k against Qualls notwithstanding.

Jones grounds to Burke who fields and throws across his body going away.  Berkman stretches and Miller got the job done.

Now we better get a run with Ausmus and Lane and Taveras or he's gonna have to get the job done again.

Thanks a lot Brad.

BTW
they played the most REDICULOUS video montage on the big screen when Springer came in.  it was clips of old western movies flashing between clips of Springer striking people out or getting people to ground weakly to the infield, with corny gunshot noises everytime he threw a pitch.  each clip of him getting somebody out was preceded by a wanted poster with that person on it, except it was not exactly a who's who of baseball's big bad batters.  i didn't even recognize most of them, but one that was particularly laughable was So Taguchi.  they actually put So Taguchi on a wanted poster, then showed Springer getting him to ground back to the mound, throwing him out with gunshot sound effects.

so bad.  almost like salt in the wounds at that point in the evening.

Bottom Ten
Burke to attempt to get it going.

Curveball from Novoa starts it off, and it's called a strike, stayed high in the zone.

Two more like it, but these are balls, 2 - 1.

In on his hands, fould right back.

Broke down and inside on him, and the count is full.

Another pitch up high, and fouled back again.

He reaches for ball four (bad idea!) and he hits it to the gap and tries for two (bad idea!) and gets it. . . .

Awesome decision-making, dude.

Berkman
gets the intentional walk, but the real question is will they walk 'em loaded to avoid the rookie, the INSANELY HOT rookie, or do they pitch to Scott so they have some wiggle room?

is the last Cubs position player.  The fact that he's batting for Novoa means that the Cubs wll bring out their last pitcher in the bottom of the inning.

You'd think Dempster might be able to go awhile, though, with his starting background.

Whoa GIDP, and the inning's over quicker than I might have expected.

Angel Guzman?  Where'd he come from?

He's got a 7.39 ERA and is 0 - 3.

I hate Brad Lidge because I live on the East Coast and because I have to wake up at 6:15 tomorrow morning.

I hate Brad Lidge because he stole a victory from Roger Clemens, and there won't be many more of those in this world.

Nieve still in, and Ramirez flies the first pitch to Willy.

Jacque Jones
flies out to DEEP center on a 2 - 1 count, against the wall.

That's a great play by Willy.

Nieve very grateful

Bottom Twelve
Guzman still pitching and it's Burke.

The count runs to 2 - 2, and this is where he was when he hit the double in the tenth.

A high pitch runs in on him, but it hits his bat.

Hey!  After an eight-pitch at bat, he singles.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 10:52 PM CDT reply actions

Moberg
Checks his swing on a slider down, but the first base ump calls it a strike.

Fastball away evens the count.

"Let's Go Mo" the crowd chants.  Hmmm; perhaps the crowd is conflicted considering the thunderous boos yesterday.

Another foul, off to his right makes it 1 - 2.

Another slider down and away, but Mo held up better.  2 - 2.

Misses again.  If he throws it again, I gotta assume Ensberg will be taking again, and walk for Berkman.

If he challenges Mo  . . . . .

Morgan walks, slider inside.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Lance
with Burke at second and Mo at first.

Nearly hit Lance in the thigh with the first pitch.

JD points out that we ought to win from this position.

But then Lance pops to shallow center.  Pierre runs in on it but drops the ball.

Burke is hung up though, and he's forced at third.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Scott
Swings over a breaking pitch.

Slider, down and away, we've seen a bunch.  And taken most of them, to our credit.

This one broke in and down on Luke and he swings at one he definitely should not have.

Pops up to Cedeno.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 11:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Munson
How the fuck have we not scored here?

Well, the answer is that in the pressure situation, both Lance and Luke lowered their standards and swung at stuff they would usually disdain.

Munson swings at a slider in and down, too.  Now a fastball is over and Munson is fucked.  No way he reaches in this at bat, he's been bamboozled.

Let's go to thirteen, and save Munson the trouble.

Well, they make the at bat continue, but I knew where that was going, Munson strikes out.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Top Thirteen
Berkman to left, Munson to first, and Borkowski to pitch.

Cedeno takes a strike, and may we see many more from Super Dave.

Strike two.  Fouled away.  A couple more.

Another.   Flies to Lane.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 11:08 PM CDT reply actions

Barrett
"Hey Barrett, you suck," say a couple of the more boisterous members of the crowd that remains.

Oh I'm sorry, that was Roy Oswalt. . . .

Munson dives to his right and backhands it, then tosses to Bork, covering.

Sunuvabitch.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 11:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Murton
waves through a change then takes a curve.

13 pitches so far for The Swedish Chef, 11 strikes.

There's another ball.

Whoa, must have been just off the black.

Musta been.

Now it's 3 - 2 after I praise Bork's control.

Flied to Lane in the corner.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Super Dave might not be in for long
since if Roy doesn't feel well enough to pitch, the start would be given to him.

by saylinara on Aug 15, 2006 11:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh wait
I didn't realize that there was noone left.  LOL.

What a game I've missed.

by saylinara on Aug 15, 2006 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Somehow
I think I would feel more safe with Lane on the mound then Pettitte or Backe or Hirsh.

by saylinara on Aug 15, 2006 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Well,
Lane has never given up a run as a major league pitcher. That's a pretty good track record.

Bottom Thirteen
AE:  Second pitch is hooked into the Crawfish Corner . . . foul.

Maybe six or seven feet.  That would have made Adam a lock for Game Hero let me say that.

Goes to 2 - 1, then a foul to even it up.

Swings at something low and away would have been ball three.

Ouch!  Hanging curve is fouled back!

There's a better curve, also fouled.

Pitch in the dirt, and I can safely say that Adam could have walked there, simply by showing some discipline.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 11:19 PM CDT reply actions

Ausmus
stand up double and I thought it was gone.

I really did.

To right over Jones head, hit some Used Car Dealer's sign.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Lane
Balloon/floater/lollipop nearly hits Taveras.

Takes a fastball strike.

If I went to sleep right now, I would get 5 hours and 55 minutes of sleep.

Thank you very fucking much Brad Lidge.

Wow Lane swung out of his shoes at that 94 mph fastball.

Not shy he does so again, 2 - 2

Strikes out swinging.

this game has presented some players with a shot at redemption for a few players.

And they have all failed to grab the ring.

Goes to the wall in right again, Jones gloves it again.

Man, I thought Brad had won it.

Here comes Bork again

It's 0 - 2 to JP and all Borkowski does is throw strikes.

Lined to Lane.

Zambrano
Yes, we are at that point.  Yesterday's starting pitcher is pinch-hitting for last Saturday's.

Z takes a strike and swings through one.

Carlos grounds to Burke, and he makes like Adam, going towards center as he picks the ball up and flips it to hte pivot.

Everett steps on the bag and throws on to Munson, inning over.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Kill him?
Hell, I just don't want to see him bat on my team anymore.

by saylinara on Aug 15, 2006 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom 14
Here's Dempster.

Burke tries to bunt but fouls it off.

A single to left.

3 for 3 off the bench, that's something.

As the hitters around him turn to jelly, Chris Burke is nails.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 11:34 PM CDT reply actions

Moberg
I think having Burke run here is a kick-ass idea.

Barrett gives us a snap throw after the pitch that makes it 2 - 1 to Morgan.

3 - 1.

END.
THIS.
THING.
NOW.

But noooooooooooo, Morgan flies to Jones, and Burke has to hold.

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 11:37 PM CDT up reply actions

by rastronomicals on Aug 15, 2006 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions

The Lancicle
no longer with Luke behind him.  Borkowski will bat next.

It's up to you Puma.

They pitch out on an 0 - 2 count.

High and away to even it.

Now the count is full, Lance has had a MUCH better at bat here than last time around.

Probably swung at ball four there.

Fouled it off to the left.

Berkman strikes out, but Burke steals second.

Bottom 15
Munson, Everett, and Ausmus due up.

by saylinara on Aug 15, 2006 11:49 PM CDT reply actions

Munson
singles to Jones on a 3-1 count.  Make it happen, Adam, make it happen.

by saylinara on Aug 15, 2006 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Everett
sacrificed Munson to second.  At this point, why play the small ball?  I'd rather see them try for the hits then move people over.  Especially when your next batters are Ausmus, Lane, and Willy.

by saylinara on Aug 15, 2006 11:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Ausmus
quickly goes 3-0 and you assume he's going to walk.

Dumpster throws a strike right off the corner and you think you're wrong.

But no, he goes ahead and walks him.

Lane up with two on.  This certainly cannot end well, can it?

by saylinara on Aug 15, 2006 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions

flies out to left and the runners don't even advance.  Shame.

by saylinara on Aug 15, 2006 11:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Willy "I Hit Once A Game" Taveras
Takes a 2-2 count and you think maybe he might work it.

However, this is Willy "I Hit Once A Game" Taveras, so he grounds into a force-out for Ausmus at second.  18-game-hitting streak my ass.

Super Dave into work his 4th inning.  If he keeps this up, he'll have gone longer then our starter.  However, I kind of expect him to be PH for in his next AB, whether it be from Pettitte or Backe.

I do expect the next pitcher, if we should need such, to be Jason Lane.  They're already whining about how their pitching staff is in disarray because of Oswalt's hand.  I certainly don't expect them to mess up the next few games because of this one.

BTW, Munson is going to have to catch tomorrow.  I can't imagine bringing in Ausmus in less then twelve hours to catch after a 17 inning game.  How is Pettitte going to deal?

Man, Burke gets on three times

fucking miserable, pathetic, disgusting, pitiful excuse for a Major League team.

by MirabeauLamar on Aug 16, 2006 12:41 AM CDT reply actions

Didn't I say
he should have come out at the last AB.  I know Garner didn't want to mess up his rotation because it would affect the next four or five down the line (especially with Oswalt hurt), but I believe you've gotta play to win each game.  If we lose the WC by one game, this is the game we look at.

by saylinara on Aug 16, 2006 12:47 AM CDT up reply actions

But yes
Very much props.  Without Borks mastery, we wouldn't have made it out of the 13th.

by saylinara on Aug 16, 2006 12:48 AM CDT up reply actions

What's more sad is that I expected to lose
But I expected it more at the hands of Pettitte.

I dunno, I just can't get behind this team anymore.  I still will always love my 'Stros, but this season is getting harder and harder to watch.  Everytime I think we're turned a corner, they're right back at rock bottom.  It's getting depressing to watch.

I like Garner because he infuses a lot of ... spirit ... into things, which is all we needed after the reign of Jimy.  Now that he's at a crossroads where his spirit is not the only thing needed, he's having trouble.  sigh
