Preview/Matchup/Game Thread Game # 52 at Cardinals

Roy Oswalt Jason Marquis
5 - 3, 3.36 6 - 4, 5.12

So here's something odd.

Looking at Marquis' ERA and his won-loss record, you immediately think that he's been the recipient of good run support.

And he has been. Although he ranks only fourth on his staff, Marquis ranks sixteenth in the league in run support at 5.54 runs per 9 innings of work.

Fair enough, but it turns out Roy is seventeenth in the league, at 5.52.

So basically, Roy gets equivalent run support to Marquis, has an ERA almost two points better, has an extra start as it happens, and still finds himself behind Marquis in wins.

Now, wins are another one of those stats derided by the sabermetric plutocracy as next to meaningless, and if one of them were reading here, they'd simply say, "proves our point," but as someone who's watched Oswalt over the last five or six games, I'm not sure that this little statistical oddity doesn't illuminate as well as anything else the way that Roy has been out of sorts lately.

He's still hard to hit, always wil be, and his walks or homers aren't up, but it just seems that runners he'd usually leave stranded have been scoring lately.

I dunno, maybe it's a bad tme to bring it up, seeing how he's coming off the 7 innings of one-run ball, but the comparison with Marquis got me thinking . . . .

Marquis Carpenter and Suppan for the Astros vs. Oswalt Pettitte and Buchholz in this three-game, and as Garner or just about anyone else on the Astros would tell you, you're just looking to win two of three.

'Course that might be a bit much to ask here, but I will say that getting swept would be devastating. Houston'd be 9-1/2 back if that little bit of tragedy played itself out, and teams have come back from larger deficits, but usually the teams that found themselves caught weren't the best in the league in pitching, as the Cardinals are.

So you gotta win at least one, and seeing how Carpenter goes tomorrow and Buchholz Wednesday, this I think is the must-win.

I swear I didn't predetermine the data in an effort to make the 'Stros look good, or to make another argument as to how much the Cardionals rely on Pujols offensively.

It just worked out this way:

Thanks
for the belly laugh I got when I read "The Hyperactive Little Freak."

I call him "Damien" Eckstein.

"Damien" might be better, certainly got a laugh out of  it.

He's a good player, but he's certainly easy to ridicule

I think I'm going to try to do some PBP...
today since I'll be limited to weekends for the foreseeable future. Shall be more challenging w/ mlb.tv, though.

by StrosDux on May 29, 2006 3:15 PM CDT reply actions

Funny
you should say that.

The girlfriend has asked if I could have some Sicilian Penne with Sausage ready for her when she gets back from work, so while I'll be able to keep up, I wasn't gonna be able to do PBP middle innings.

So if you could take it through six anyway, that'd be great.

Wow. Had No Clue.
Found this, once I looked:
ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals expect to place pitcher Chris Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list on Tuesday, and are preparing to call up right-hander Anthony Reyes from the minors to take his spot in the rotation.

Chris Carpenter
Starting Pitcher
St. Louis Cardinals

Profile
2006 SEASON STATISTICS
GM W L BB K ERA

"We're expecting to pitch somebody else tomorrow, like Anthony," manager Tony La Russa said before Monday's game against the Astros. "I just know he's on call and expecting to pitch."

Carpenter was scratched from his last scheduled start due to inflammation under his right shoulder blade, an injury the team described as bursitis, and has not thrown a bullpen session since then. Reyes worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings at Kansas City earlier this month.

Well, now we should win two. . . .

Thanks for the heads up.

Are you trying to suggest...
that part of the reason for this recent slide is managerial incompetene?;-)

by StrosDux on May 29, 2006 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Not Really
Although I will say I'd rather lose with Roy than with someone else.

It might make me wonder whether after a first part of the season that has seen Roy among the major league leaders in innings pitched or "Pitcher Abuse Points" as Prospectus calls it, there might not be a doctrine to try and take it easy on Roy.

With OPP up to start the inning, you know there isn't that much difference between what would happen with Orlando hitting  as what would happen with Roy

And shouldn't the sequence be Chad Dan Lidge, or has Dan been demoted?

Big confidence dropoff from Oswalt to Trever Miller.

but this team has come back from two-run deficits several times this year.

I just think that's obnoxious.

I'm not 'hoping', per se. I just know it's infinitely more possible this year than last.

by StrosDux on May 29, 2006 5:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I mean it's the *SEVENTH*
could you be more arrogant? I understand if they were up by 4 or 5 or more.

They're up by 2.

That crap pisses me off.

by StrosDux on May 29, 2006 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Garner
figured TLR would use Spiezio to picnh hit for Rodriguez, at which point he'd come in with Qualls.

When TLR didn't he figured he had the advantage lefty-lefty.  No, the fault there was all Miller's.

Stupid fucking idiot.  If he can't hit, he must learn to sit and take his pitches.  I think Izzy was willing to walk him at that point.

by saylinara on May 29, 2006 6:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Well...
at the very least he has improved somewhat in that respect.

But I agree w/ the general principle.

I don't buy Burke as a better alternative, though.

He can be a good enough MI when Bidge retires (read: 2nd Baseman), but he's not an OFer, much less a corner OF, much less a RFer.

I can take him in CF or LF but I don't want to see him again at SS or RF.

But that's JMHO.

by StrosDux on May 29, 2006 6:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Phil Garner sucks
This is the game the 'stros were supposed to take in this series BECAUSE OF Roy Oswalt. Roy Oswalt is supposed to go out and get you a "W", not the bullpen. Its not like they had Barry Bonds to pinch hit, they had Orlando F'ing Palmerio.
Weigh your options: 1) We likely sacrifice an out to have Roy pitch another inning, taking away an inning from a struggling bullpen, or 2)Pinch Hit OP(Should've been Lamb)who isn't going to go deep, and have your struggling bullpen pitch an extra inning.

Seemed like an easy decision to me, guess not.

by jakechap20 on May 29, 2006 6:03 PM CDT reply actions

My Guess
something we don't know about it is going on there.

by rastronomicals on May 29, 2006 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions

it was a weird decision...
unless Roy's hurt. Particularly considering how thoroughly the BP has been abused and used in recent weeks.

No way in hell a vet pitcher who is pitching a shutout (if not being dominating) should come out of the game then otherwise.

But maybe they know something I don't.

Or Maybe Gar's just lost his mind.

by StrosDux on May 29, 2006 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah and that why you guys lost 3 out 4 at Washington and slowly sinking out of the division race.   Hey, there is always the wild card for you guys to win.   Seriously, I am done joking around and I hope I see the Astros in playoff because the last two NLCS were classics.

Rastro...
I know you intentially exercise restraint as often as possible to maintain a forum in which people can freely express their thoughts and opinions, but in cases like this where people are obviously dropping inflamatory posts with no intention other than to rile up the locals, couldn't you just delete a post like this so we can avoid spitting matches like the one we had during the Giants series?

by littlevisigoth on May 30, 2006 1:34 PM CDT reply actions

You Know
I'd meant to update that toteboard, but got sidetracked with all the misplaced (in my mind) speculation about broadcasters' arrogance and Garner's idiocy

I'd like to stay with the Pujols toteboard as the series goes on, not to aggravate Cards fans, but because it should be an interesting gauge of how things are going.  [Hint: I don't think much of the Cards' offense without Pujols, although I certainly respect the starting pitching]

As far as inflammatory, well, it's in the eyes of the beholder.  Some schmuck who called himself a Giants fan started talking shit about people from Texas.  I won't have that.

I won't have anyone good enough to come here having to read shit tossed at them coz of where they were born, their skin color, their religion, their sex, their politics, or where they choose to reside.  That's just common sense.

But if a Cards fan notes that Houston is sinking in the divisional race, it's kind of like the truth hurts, no?  And I'd hate for TCB to get a reputation as a place that can dish it out but can't take it.

I know, for example, I was on board with the Bonds bashers.  And good for me:  the Bonds bashers are right, whatever the hell Gary Gillette says.

Hopefully, the level of discourse here is such that rather than being drawn into the muck, we can raise the consciouness of the dissenter, if you know what I'm saying . . . .

your blog, your discretion
and i respect that.  nanny nanny boo boo posts just rub me the wrong way.

and about the starting pitcher tonight, anything less than Carpenter has got to be a good thing, but i always cringe when you hear "touted prospect making [first, second, whatever] major league start" against the Astros.  seems like this crew likes to make young pitchers look like future superstars.

Reyes
is the main reason the Cards didn't mind taking a risk on Ponson.  They figured worst thing that can happen, they release Ponson and look at their best pitching prospect a half-season sooner.

But better the evil you haven't seen than the one you have?

I saw that report on ESPN.com
then i just trolled over to yahoo and it says differently, it says we are paying him 3.5 mil per month....... http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb;_ylt=AmJ3JSWtgPZNCECx3hE2fi85nYcB

Either way its going to happen eventually..

just listened to Charlie Palillo's interview
with Purpura, who says they've heard nothing new from Clemens or his agents and they have nothing to report.  this coming after they ran a quote from one of the Hendricks during the top of the hour ticker, saying that no deal was done and that Clemens hasn't made up his mind yet.

maybe it's all a smokescreen because it's getting pounded out and nobody wants to show their hand in the media, but equally as speculative is that there's a bogus scoop coming out of NY trying to sabotage negotiations with the Astros.  not trying to instigate conspiracy theories, but i'm confused as to where this story originated.

I posted this in the sidebar
but I heard it got leaked from the Yankees after they were told they were out of the running.

"inflammatory, in a good sort of way"
huh?

I will give you the benefit of the doubt in your posts here, but think that inflammatory by its definition connotes something derogatory, negative.

And even if the Astros take the next two  by a combined 20 - 0, I'm still not likely to go over to viva el birdos and crow.  To what purpose?  I've got business here, and you'd certainly need no reminders from me about the final scores.
