Astros in talks with Lo Duca

8

Hat to trade rumors, I could have read the article a hundred times and always skipped the last half. Wade wants another veteran catcher and we're negotiating with Lo Duca. This is an interesting signing to me because Lo Duca has a fairly adept ability to get on base. This all very preliminary because it's just negotiating, but this would probably be a plus move for us. That is, of course, if you forget about the whole My Space fiasco.

Ed Wade high on Norris and Perez

But for Nieve and Paulino, it's high noon. Some interesting tid bits, but mostly more of the same company-line schpeel from the first interview. He also is excited for Rule V, de la Verra.

Pettitte, Wiggy to become Astros?

5

John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus handicaps the race for the top 16 remaining free agents. For those who don't have a subscription, Perrotto notes Pettitte backed himself into a corner by not re-signing with the Yankees and most likely will sign with Houston for a reduced price. Teams have shown interest in Wigginton, but his landing spot may be Minute Maid Park as well. I don't see either of these two coming back here, given Ed and Drayton's statements to the contrary. For what it's worth: The free agents are ranked by WARP3- wins above replacement player...supposing that both Pettitte and Wigginton would take a spot in the starting lineup from replacement level players, a +5.5 wins could be the result. Again though, this would take a payroll bump of more than $10 million most likely.

Ed Wade Interview with JJO: The Hitters

A lot of standard company line b/s, but Ed Wade opines that Chris Johnson will get a serious look in Spring Training. There's no mention of Sutton or Bogusevic in this part of the interview--disappointing.

Astros' scouting department speaks to press

Bobby Heck answered questions and introduced Nick Venuto as the Astros Scout of the Year for 2008. Team scouting departments are akin to Area 51- shrouded in extreme secrecy.

Bobby Heck enjoying a nice cocktail, having a chat with his buddy Ed. This image isn't to reflect negatively on Mr. Heck or say that he is an alcoholic, but hey, gentlemen enjoy a fine cocktail, am i right? This image was created in response to Bobby Heck's explanation of players in the Astros farm system being in the fast lane, and players being in the slow lane, and hopefully they don't break down and need repairs. Proud AAA patron.
