The Return of The Salamander
Chris Sampson Aaron Harang
1 - 0, 0.00 2 - 0, 5.40

What does it say about things when I admit that I'm happy it's our number five guy facing the Reds' ace tonight, and not our number three?

Sampson admits he's not 100 percent healthy after the calf, but then again Woody Williams is not 100 percent young, either.

Harang is 6 - 5 lifetime against Houston with a 4.15 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP, but his emergence as a premier pitcher last year found special expression in his dominance of the Astros.

If you aren't aware, you might wanna sit down.

In 2006, Harang was 4 - 0 against Houston with a 2.76 ERA and a frighteningly low 0.92 WHIP.

In other, more pleasant, news, not only is Carlos Lee leading the NL in RBIs through 12 games, he looks pretty good when compared against the RBI greats in team history, as well.

I took a look at the players who put up the ten greatest seasons by RBI in team history, and only one of them had more RBI through twelve games than El Caballo does.

I think I would rather have our # 5 starter going
Than the # 2-4 right now.  With Jennings hurt, Woody being 93 years old and my dislike for Wandy, I hold Sampson as the #2 starter for now.  =)

Wonder if/when
we'll see some bunt hit attempts.  not familiar enough with the Reds lineup to know who's a good candidate for that.  sounds like his issue is more fielding his position than actually pitching.

carlos being carlos
I've checked out the highlights of Lee's three hits at least five times and all I could say to myself is 'when that guy is on he is ON!' He almost took down the scoreboard on that bases-loaded double last night.

WHEN berkman starts to hit and burke gets his act together, we're going to have a very potent lineup... maybe even lure clemens back if we show him that we can actually score runs...

It's an exciting time to be a 'stros fan!!!!

Reds guy telling us Burke is .167 against Harang on his career. But I'm not sure that totally explains the night off. I think it'd be interesting if Lane let's say goes 1 for 5 with a 3-run homer. C'mon Bidge, walk, just so we can say you did. Bidge flies to right, Whiffey Jr. gloves it.

Bottom One
Freel

First pitch is fouled off to the right in the first few rows of the stands.

Berkman very aggressive with it, practically diving into the stands for it.

Comes up empty, though.

Next pitch is grounded to Lamb.

First groundball out of the evening for Mr. Sampson.  May there be many more.

El Kabong takes a 2 - 2 pitch and flies it to center. Not a positive result, but still with two strikes he's up the middle with it.

Everett
strikes out swinging on a high fastball.

After leading the league in '06, Harang came into tonight with 14 K's.

He's got 16 now.

Bottom Two
Jr. really timed it well on the jump to rob Lane. As I watching, I kind of figured that a) the ball would be over the line and b) that Griffey would nab it.

Whiffey flies out to Lane, who ranges over into left and takes the ball as Lee looks on.

by rastronomicals on Apr 18, 2007 6:33 PM CDT reply actions

Brandon Phillips
had given us some trouble last year as I recall, and he does so again, powering one to left center that hits the wall and bounces over for a solo home run. 1 - 0 Reds.

about Sampson
I actually heard that one reason that Sampson got moved back and Oswalt got moved up was something along the lines of Oswalt having to be somewhere or something.  Now I doubt that this is true but it might be worth watching the dugout to see if Oswalt is present.  Not sure if my source was talking BS or what, but I wouldn't totally ignore it.  Not totally...

Top Three
Ausmus flies to Hamilton in center. Hamilton of course the Rule V guy the Reds picked up, and they've decided to try and keep him on the roster all year. So far so good, I guess.

by rastronomicals on Apr 18, 2007 6:51 PM CDT reply actions

Berkman
Goes 2 - 1, then 3 - 2, then fouls one off.

He's done enough of that this year that he's been walking, anyway.

Came in with 12 walks and a .377 OBP . . . even as the average is well south of .200.

Grounded deep to second, only play at first, so Lamb moves up.

Sympathy for Ken Johnson

by rastronomicals on Apr 18, 2007 6:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Lee
goes 3 - 1, then walks for only the fourth time this year. Where Lance's OBP is 200 points higher than his average, Carlos' is 25 points higher. Action for Luke. . . .
Sympathy for Ken Johnson

by rastronomicals on Apr 18, 2007 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Luke
Bounces a slider, and it's 2 - 0, Harang into a wild patch, see if we can make him pay. Next pitch is a fastball right down the middle, 93 mph swung through. Away, 3 - 1. A fastball a little up is fouled back to fill the count. High AND away. Harang misses both ways, and that loads the bases with one out for Lane.

Lane
Fouled off to the right and it's 0 - 2.

Ball one high is fouled directly back.  :-(

Slider down strikes him out swinging. Real good pitch, but that doesn't mean he should have swung.

Sympathy for Ken Johnson

by rastronomicals on Apr 18, 2007 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Everett
harang misses high twice, Reds announcers saying he's doing that a lot more than usual, as usually he misses down.

2 - 1 then another fastball down the pipe is swung through.  Next pitch is a replay to end the inning.

In money situations, Harang has gone to the fastball and we have not yet been able to hit it.

Sympathy for Ken Johnson

by rastronomicals on Apr 18, 2007 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom Four
Hamilton goes 2 -2 before homering to left.

Pitch was left up, Sampson knew what the result was as soon as the pitch left his hand.  By tthe time the ball went over the wall. Sampson was halfway to first base with his head down.

 2 - 0 Reds.

Berkman
Pulls off the first pitch, then swings at a high fastball best left alone.

Checks his swing, and the ump gives him it, surprisingly, to go 2 - 2.

Now it's 3 - 2.  Low pitch is hit sharply on the ground to Phillips, not bad.

Lamb is able to advance.

Lee
looking for number 17.

Reds guys are saying that Lee leading the league in RBIs is misleading because 10 of his RBI came in two games.

Poppycock.  That's two games we absolutely flat out lose without him.

So the spirit of the stat is conveyed.

A pitch escapes Ross, and I thought Lamb would scamper home, but he got cold feet it looked like, 'cause he wasn't asleep.

A few pitches later Lee grounds to Phillips and Lamb scores.

Number 17 indeed, and it's now 2 - 1  Reds.

Little nubber 15 - 20 feet up the third base line.

Ausmus a great play, out from behind the plat eiin a flash, picks it up, whirls heaves all in one motion, and the throw beats Hamilton by a step.

Freel into second, but here comes Labosierre to look at Sampson, who came off the mound funny.

five hits two runs and two walks in seven for Chris.  I've been picking him apart here for two hours, but this is a tremendoug start from your number five guy.

No, he's serious, second pitch is bunted foul.

Still showing bunt with two strikes, but the pitch is taken high.

Misses away to even it at 2.

Wheeler's gone over to first like four times during the Dunn AB.  Red fans are annoyed, and so am I, really.  with a four run lead, you get your guy, it doesn't matter what the guy on first does.

If tomorrow's game is 3 - 2 entering the ninth, whaffuh?

Hatteberg is 2 - 0.

3 - 0.

Wheeler comes back to get the Reds first baseman.
