Trade Alert - We have a closer

Stros just traded Burke, Qualls, and Juan Gutierrez to the D-Backs for Jose Valverde.

http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071214&content_id=2326595&vkey=news_hou &fext=.jsp&c_id=hou

This thing literally went down a few minutes ago, so not much info out yet.

D-Backs also traded for Dan Haren, so our trade kinda takes a back seat to that one.

me too
We weren't going to get much for burke, so packaging him was our only option.  I remember seeing Gutierrez a couple times, but can't remember much about him.  Was he a decent prospect? Or someone we can afford to give up?

by BigTexBD on Dec 14, 2007 5:41 PM CST reply actions

I like Gutierrez a lot
He has lost some of his luster(but what Astro prospect hasn't). I think he lost some velocity last year, at least consistent velocity. He has pretty good secondary stuff too. He has had a hard time staying in shape, staying focussed, and work ethic was in question. He is a hit or miss guy. I once thought he was the best SP prospect the Astros had.

If he gets all his mental stuff and stays in shape he can turn out good, but he sure did have a crappy year last year because of the formentioned problems

trade
I like it, too. Looking at Valverde, he's been good for a while, with last year as his first as a full-time closer. I don't know what his contract status is.

Gutierrez is the 4th best prospect in Baseball America's list. We have now traded away our 3rd and 4th best prospects, both of them SPs. Oh well, it's a little irksome, but Valverde looks good to me.

FA after 09
He only made 2 mil last year, but because he closed so many games last year I would think it will go up to the 5M range

I know it sounds contradictory me liking this
I kept saying why keep getting veterans and this team can't win.

The reason I like this trade is because Valverde is worth way more than what they gave up for him. So I am in fact being consistent in the fact that they gained a greater asset. The D-Backs must love Burke and Gutierrez for this to happen.

I like it...
Gutierrez could be a solid pitcher, but he didn't impress me last year. Burke is garbage and Qualls is Qualls.

I like the way our team is looking.
Anyone know if anything is going to happen to Tejada, suspension wise?

Who will replace Qualls?
I see Qualls as the big loss in this transaction. I liked Gutierrez, too, but Qualls was the rock for the 2008 bullpen. Who will assume his role?

I'm drawing a blank on Valverde so I cannot comment on good or bad trade.

The sentiment here seems to be it was good trade. That's comforting.

Good question...
but I'd much rather have a set-up man question than a closer question.

From their blog:

Awesome wheeling and dealing by JB today!

Acquiring Haren and selling high on Valverde, I love it!!

by NGOChocolate on Fri Dec 14, 2007 at 06:59:37 PM EDT

It all makes sense, now...
Man, JByrnes outdid himself on this day.

First, the Valverde deal. I love it. You toss Valverde, who, while effective this year and 05, looked horrible in 06, for the remarkably consistent Qualls, who slots right into the 7th inning, get a reasonable prospect (4th in the Astros system according to BA) who held the PCL to a 4.15 ERA in Gutierrez, and a decent utility guy in Chris Burke, who looked pretty damn good in 06. I'd almost take Qualls for Valverde straight up, if only to lower my blood pressure. Gotta think this, if not a clear win for us, fits into JByrnes' pitching strategy

Hold on
Ed Wade just said that Valverde is a FA after 08

Where do yall see major league service time? I came up with 4yrs 90 days. I don't see how he is a FA after 5 1/2 years.

I like the deal much less if he is a FA in 09 instead of 10.

Help me out on the site

Kinda funny...
but what do all these trades say about the Astros "top" prospects?

by TexSkins on Dec 14, 2007 6:39 PM CST reply actions

I like Valverde a lot.
I had him on my fantasy teams the past two years and he piles up a lot of points.  He is kind of emotional and crazy, but he has very good stuff.  This is like picking up another Brad Lidge.  But, as much as I like the idea of Valverde as closer, I think this probably was a bad idea from a long term view.  The pool of pitching prospects (and pitching depth for next season, even) has been whittled into a tiny group.  I think giving up both Qualls and Gutierrez in the trade probably was excessive, but I'm sure the trade doesn't get done without it.  If Qualls becomes a good closer for Arizona sometime in the next couple of years, the trade won't looks so great for the Astros.  But those are the chances you take.

I am befuddled if Wade said he has only one more year of arbitration eligibility.  Cott's contracts web site does not show Valverde as a potential free agent for 09.  But, if Wade said it, he should know.  Yes, my view of this trade changes radically if he only has one more year of arbitration eligibility.

by clack on Dec 14, 2007 6:49 PM CST reply actions

I am right
I am sure about it. He was demoted twice(in 06/04), was on injury assignment in 05, and spent a few months in the minors in 03. 03-07 is 5 years and he spent several months in the minors during that time(about 1/2 a year). Last year was his first ARB year. All this points to me being right and Wade once again being a TARD. Great trade Wade, maybe even better than you know.

What the hell is going on? The GM doesn't know how much service time a player has!!!!!!!!!!!!

My first mistake was assuming you knew what I was talking about.

by Shamus on Dec 14, 2007 7:00 PM CST up reply actions

It is better than you think
If Valverde stays at his current level he can be traded for more than they gave up if the team busts. I think it is a very very solid trade.

hmmm....
you might be right about that.

by bigfatdrunk on Dec 14, 2007 7:17 PM CST up reply actions

Don't like
And does his moves today make Byrnes the best GM in the league?  Outside of the Quentin deal, he seems to be putting together quite a juggernaut.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Qualls and Valverde wind up with very similar numbers, except for saves.  But, since Valverde has that shiny, closer smell to him, Wade needed him like a baby needs a teat.  Because of that, Valverde will be more expensive to maintain.

Burke was available because we are wasting $5MM/year on Matsui.  And we had to toss in another live arm in Juan G., which means we need to go spend more money on a reliever to replace him.

I'm not sure if Drayton's directive to Wade was to shuffle the chairs on the Titanic to make it look like they were doing something, anything to improve the team.  So far, though, the only deal I like was the one for Villareal.  Otherwise, I see a team that is older, overpaid, right-handed heavy, and with poor depth in the rotation and the pen.  Oh yeah, and a farm system that is easily the worst in the league.

in our new team to go head-to-head with any of the other teams in NL Central.

Meh
I'm a qualls fan, so I'm not real big on this trade... and I have reserved ill-feelings towards Valverde for reasons unknown... we'll see how this turns out.

unknown reasons for ill feelings?
I'm not sure what you are talking about.  But I recall that some of the Astros in the past have taken exception to Valverde's antics on the mound.  He is a bit of a showboat, with fist pumping and the like.  They probably will feel differently if he is on their side.

Lance Berkman says (per Chronicle)
Berkman said Valverde's fist pumps and antics on the mound didn't sit well with the some Astros when they played against him.

"Valverde had a good year last year, but I am not going to lie," Berkman said. "I am definitely concerned about his antics. He's one of the more demonstrative pitchers in the league, and I know that from playing against him that rubs guys the wrong way.

"It reflects poorly on the team and doesn't do anything but give the opposing team fuel for the next time he goes out. I hope those issues are addressed.

nah
native of houston living in phoenix.  valverde is is great pickup.  guy has mad fire on the mound, he was finally in shape this year.  Lean mean, he is just starting to find his niche as a closer this year.  I say we got him at the top of his game right now.
mark grace loves the guy.  he does color on dbacks games locally. calls him "papa grande".  guy was just shut down last year and i watched a lot of games.  he kept the ball down very well. something that i just cant say that lidge is capable of doing at this stage.  good trade.  now we need a number 2 pitcher.  drayton has to open his wallet for this one.  hopefully not prior. please no.

confused and amused
I amused at all the fuss over a 65 inning pitcher when there are 700+ innings that must be pitched by starters not named Roy O.

Yep
And we seem to be getting rid of a lot of players who were on the 40 man roster, and only getting a few in return. Yea the players in return may be of better quality... but we're not going to be a very deep team in any position... except utility infield.

2008 slogan
Instead of 2007's "Return of the Good Guys", how about:

"Who Are These Guys?"

I think that beats "Goodbye to the Good Guys."

The Twins can have the old slogan.  It sucked.
