| Wandy Rodriguez | Paul Maholm |
| 6 - 2, 3.88 | 2 - 4, 4.33 |
Shit. Find myself behind today, so no time for long ruminations.
There probably isn't all that much to say anyway, except that if Wandy steps up here, it will in my mind officially end the Period of Doubt and formally usher in the era of Wandy Rodriguez, Respected Major League Starter, Who's Gotten It Done.
Also wanted to note the foolish words of Jim Tracy, which were not likely to endear their speaker to his players.
Maholm went three inings in Houston April 23, gave up 7 hits, 5 runs. Biggio led off the game with a homer. Ensberg homered in the same inning, and Burke later hit a double off Maholm, before he departed.

Top of the First
Takes a strike, then one of his slappy fouls off to the right, then a ball high to get it 1 - 2.
He grounds to Castillo.
Biggio
in out and up gets it to 3 - 0, before Maholm sneaks one off the outside corner. Then a slider away and down which has the intended result.
The 3- 2 pitch is too far inside, and Biggio didn't go far enough around, for Maholm's liking.
Craig walks.

Bottom of the First
Hit sharply to Lamb, who lets it go through his legs for an error, and he bends over and looks through his legs to makes sure that Preston was able to field it.
Which he was.

Bay
Fouled back. Curve ball high, don't like that.
He singles to left on another curveball slightly lower. They send McLouth, and good decision it was too, 'cause Burke's throw is cut off.
Sanchez takes second.
1 - 0 Buccos.

Nasty curveball and Wilson whiffs.
Nice sequence for Wandy right there.

Bautista
Quickly 0 - 2 again, and it may be 1- 0, but it's hard to find fault with anything Wandy has done so far, except for a curve slightly high to Bay.
Bautista hits it to Everett who goes in the whole but throw it wide of Biggio trying to get the FC.\
Another error, and both runs are unearned.

Second pitch is a fastball high and away.
Before the third pitch can be unfurled, the Pirates' walking coach comes out to pay a visit.
Fastball down in the zone is slapped into center, but Willy wasn't sure that McLouth couldn't get to it.

But it doesn't look like he ever tagged Burke.

Lane
I am rooting for you here, sir, at the least please do not have a stupid at bat.
A ball and a foul evens the count.
The Pirates feed shows us Lidge preparing in the pen and we now know Bay will bat in the bottom of the inning.
It's now 2- 2 between Gonzo (yes! they just called him that) and Lane.
Lane gives it a ride to right, but Bautista is able to snare it, and short of the warning track.

I know that's a horrible thing to say, but it just kind of gauges where I stand as a fan and with the creative approaches to losing we've seen lately.
But no! scratch the elegy. Wheeler stays in, and I guess it's because it's not a save situation, and because they'd rather use a guy who's already given up a homer against Burnitz to face Bay.
Freddy Sanchez
2 balls and a strike, goes to 2 - 2 with a foul off to the right
Nice pitch just at the corner and Sanchez K's looking.
Jason Bay
Fastball down the middle.

Doumit
Qualls throws a slider that stays way down to go to 2- 1.
Next pitched is fouled off to even the count.
Another slider in the dirt, full count.

Midnight EST ladies and germs.
Bay steals and Wilson takes a slider for a ball.
So they decide to intentionally walk Craig Wilson.
Alright then,

Bautista
Bautista checked his swing on a slider, shit. 1- 0.
Fastball fouled back.
Slider that caught the bottom of the zone, do that again and he is toast Brad.
wild pitch/passed ball through Munson's legs gets Bay to third, and Wilson to second.
Bounced in the dirt, Munson grabs it, 3 - 2.
Blew a fastball by him.
On to the 17th.

Lane
Lane takes ball one. He grounds it to the right side as Munson takes third.

Willy T
Fastball catches the outside corner, crap.
Fouled back, 0 - 2.
Pitch is taken high. Pitch is taken low, 2- 2.
Paulino has to come out of his crouch to catch the next one, 3 - 2.
Play smart Willy. He lines it up the middle.
Willy Fucking Taveras you are God.
by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Willy is my new hero
Lidge better not fuck this up.
Biggio
Two straight balls from Vogeslong to start off Bidge.
Paulino had called for a pitchout count's 3 - 0 and Taveras steals second and takes third on the throwing error.
They then intentionally walk Bidge.

Pettitte?????
I guess they're gonna ask Gallo to close it out. Or I dunno maybe we'd haver a shot with Borkowski.
Not saying Brad would have been automatic, but I would have tried to get a third inning out of him.
Andy grounds out to short.

I don't think I would have asked Lidge to go three
Bottom of the 17th
First pitch is homered to center.
7 - 7.

If the Pirates do not win the game here, who is going to pitch the 18th?

Well considering
Paulino
Then a strike.
Ground ball through the left side hole.
by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions
McLouth
Gallo gets ahead 0 - 1. McLouth swings through one, 0 - 2. Something in the dirt.
Lined hard and Everett jumps up in the air snags it, he takes a shot at first and the ball gets past Lamb. Paulino wants to take off, but runs into Lamb and by that time the ball has been fetchd by Biggio who was backing up.
Paulino crawls back into first.
In short if Lamb hadn't been in Paulino's way, he would have been able to go, and would have been out easily at second.

The ball hit Off His Foot.
Giving up the homer sucked, but be fair. And he got out of the inning dspite some bad luck.

Jack Wilson
Wilson grounds it off Gallo's foot, the ball bounces away and everyone is safe.

Freddy Sanchez
Munson and Gallo weren't communicating on that one.
Fouled off to even the count.
Low 2 -1.
High breaking ball is called a strike, and no matter what you do, Mike, do not throw that pitch again.
2 - 2 with Bay of course on deck. A waaay high pitch is swung at and fouled back.
The next pitch is popped up and it is caught in foul territory by Morgan.

Where's Burke when you need him
We are gonna end up

Top of the 18th

Lamb's swinging 3 - 0 and he fouled it off.
Flies to McLouth.

All we need is a seeing-eye single.
What was I thinking as he flies out to right on the first fucking pitch didn't even give Eric B a chance to scope out third.

Bay
1 - 1 count. Curveball drops in and Bay looks at it.
Bay swung at something way high, and that's a surprise considering how hot he is.
Count is even at 2, and Mike dropped a curve in that should have been strike three.
Bay walked, but Mike got fucked there.

C Wilson
Angels just made their last out, and we are the last game going people (person?)
Though maybe not for long, as a passed ball/wild pitch is seized upon Bay and he aggressively takes second. Ball had not spun all that far from Munson.
Now they intentionally walk Wilson.
by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 11:50 PM CDT up reply actions
Well
Gallo throws a wild pitch on the intentional walk.
Bay takes third, and Gallo completes the intentional BB without allowing Bay to score.
Gallo is removed and you gotta say that as a professional you are expected to pay attention.
Borkowski coming in, to try and pull off a miracle.
by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions
Bautista
First pitch is high as they don't look to be walking him intentionally at any rate.
Outfielders at dep infield positions.
2 - 0 pitch is swung at and missed.
2 - 1 pitch is fouled back. And again.

Although you must say, it's not surprising
Trying to Fgure Out That Part
Qualls was in the three-slot and Munson was in the seven-slot.
I think the only way to do what you're saying is to have Qualls hit for himself and run the double switch at the start of the next inning, if you didn't want to use Qualls for three innings, or suck it up and use Chadley for three.
Either way you'd have to have Qualls hit for himself, and that's giving it up on the front side.

See I would have taken that risk
What killed the team
Sorry for all the posts in a row
Looking over Gameday, something that I didn't really truly fathom during the game, is why would you put the pitchers spot in front of Ensberg??? I kept wondering why he kept leading off every inning and duh.
Another thing that hindered us was our starting lineup tonight. Because Burke was in the lineup, there wasn't a lot of shuffling that could be done.
Third thing, and last, I swear. Garner needs to make serious on his jokes about Bruntlett making a good catcher. I still stand firm that this game could have been won, or at least that run prevented, if we had a fresher catcher (Also, a less stupid Gallo, but I digress). I couldn't see it myself, but after every play after about the 15th, the radio announcers kept saying how slowly Munson was moving and how his leg movements were sort of disorienting.
What gets me is that Bay

You know, it would have least been honorable
But noooo. Gallo just had to decide to hand them the game. On a silver platter. Words cannot describe how pissed I am at him. Now that we have a semi-decent lefty in Miller can we send you back to class A? Please.
Gallo and Munson are going to hand the game
Here comes Borkowski.
He has to strike out Bautista
Thank You saylinara
Any sane person would have gone to bed hours ago, or gone drinking, or whatever, but if you were here, you definitely deserve the shout-out.
