Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Matchup/Game Thread Game # 50 at Pirates

Wandy Rodriguez Paul Maholm
6 - 2, 3.88 2 - 4, 4.33

Shit. Find myself behind today, so no time for long ruminations.

There probably isn't all that much to say anyway, except that if Wandy steps up here, it will in my mind officially end the Period of Doubt and formally usher in the era of Wandy Rodriguez, Respected Major League Starter, Who's Gotten It Done.

Also wanted to note the foolish words of Jim Tracy, which were not likely to endear their speaker to his players.

Maholm went three inings in Houston April 23, gave up 7 hits, 5 runs. Biggio led off the game with a homer. Ensberg homered in the same inning, and Burke later hit a double off Maholm, before he departed.

Top of the First
Maholm to face Taveras, who needs another four-hit game to get the BA where I'd like.

Takes a strike, then one of his slappy fouls off to the right, then a ball high to get it 1 - 2.

He grounds to Castillo.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:08 PM CDT reply actions

Biggio
again has the homer off Maholm, and the ohfer five last night.

in out and up gets it to 3 - 0, before Maholm sneaks one off the outside corner.  Then a slider away and down which has the intended result.

The 3- 2 pitch is too far inside, and Biggio didn't go far enough around, for Maholm's liking.

Craig walks.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Burke
On a 1- 1 pitch he slaps it the other way, and had it dropped in it would have been trouble for Pittsburgh, but alas, it did not.

Easy fly ball to Bautista in right.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Ensberg
singles to left-center, and again that's the first hit that wasn't a homer since May 20.

Biggio takes second.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Lamb
good backdoor curveball drops in to make it 1-2

Goes to 2- 2, then Lamb grounds to short.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom of the First
McLouth looks at a fastball strike to start off then fouls one off to the left side, to get 0 - 2.

Hit sharply to Lamb, who lets it go through his legs for an error, and he bends over and looks through his legs to makes sure that Preston was able to field it.

Which he was.

"easy ground ball" sayeth the Pirates guys, and I agreeth.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:21 PM CDT reply actions

Jack Wilson
Runner is leaving as Wilson hits it sharply to Ensberg, so no DP, but the play is made at first.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Freddy Sanchez
Quickly 3 - 0.

Sanchez looks at a strike.

Good cut fastball catches the lower inside corner, 3- 2.

A fastball barely misses.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Bay
has homered in four straight games, the Pirates announcers tell us, unable to hide their glee.

Fouled back.  Curve ball high, don't like that.

He singles to left on another curveball slightly lower.  They send McLouth, and good decision it was too, 'cause Burke's throw is cut off.

Sanchez takes second.

1 - 0 Buccos.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Craig Wilson
Quickly 0 - 2.  then a curveball too low.

Fastball inside misses, good pitch though.

Nasty curveball and Wilson whiffs.

Nice sequence for Wandy right there.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Bautista
playing instead of Burnitz tonight.

Quickly 0 - 2 again, and it may be 1- 0, but it's hard to find fault with anything Wandy has done so far, except for a curve slightly high to Bay.

Bautista hits it to Everett who goes in the whole but throw it wide of Biggio trying to get the FC.\

Another error, and both runs are unearned.

What's that like three errors in a week for Everett?

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Castillo
they'll walk him to load the bases and face Doumit.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Doumit
Wandy starts with a ball, but the next pitch is a fastball that Doumit swings through.

Curveball in the dirt makes it 2- 1.

Fastball on the outside corner is fouled back, Doumit was a little anxious.

Good curve should get him, no?

A good curveball did.

Wandy pitched well, his defense absolutely betrayed him.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:35 PM CDT up reply actions

Munson
2 - 0 quickly, then 2- 1- then a single up the box that Maholm frantically hops out of the way of.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Everett
hits into an FC, Munson out at second.

If he's going to turn into a league average shortstop defensively, he needs to do better than that.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom of the Second
Maholm reaches at something in the dirt for the strikeout.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

McLouth
Hits it deep to straightaway center on the first pitch.

Willy adjusts, makes the catch.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions

J Wilson
Curveball hung up, Wilson deposits it in right, in front of Press'n

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Freddy Sanchez
reaches at something after Wandy fell behind 1 - 0 and pops it gently to Wilson in right.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Top of the Third
Just looking at the linescore, it says Wandy has one earned run.  Don't understand how, the first run was a guy who reachd on an error, and the second run came around and scored on an error.

Taveras pops to short.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:50 PM CDT reply actions

Biggio
takes his second walk of the night

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Burke
Takes a pitch for ball two, and this appears to be a broken hit and run.  Biggo stops, reverses his field and slides into first, but he's tagged and out.

A successful hit and run is one of the prettiest plays in baseball, but it so rarely successful that I can't really call myself a fan of the play.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I had one, George, from when I was 3 to about 18.  He was whistle-trained.

by saylinara on May 27, 2006 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom of the Third
Bay grounds out to Wandy who taks a few steps to Lamb then tosses underhand.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:56 PM CDT reply actions

Thor Wilson
struck out swinging at a changeup

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Bautista
breaks his bat on fastball but the ball lands in between Willy and Preston.

A single.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Castillo
Swings at something in the dirt to go 1 - 1, then Bautista tries running as Wandy goes to first.  Lamb's throw is a little shaky, but Everett grabs it and manages to tag out Bautista.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Top of the Fourth
Ensberg flies it out to the 375 sign in right, Bautista, sporting a look that might be describdas "Biggio Classic", squeezes the glove.

Taken for a ride, but kicked off short.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:04 PM CDT reply actions

Lamb
doubles to the wall in center, and neatly played by McLouth as Lamb boogies into second.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Hey!
Wilson's average is up to .264...

That's like, the highest it's been all year.

by saylinara on May 27, 2006 7:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Wilson
Curve ball away takes it to 3 - 1.
A curveball in the dirt makes it a walk.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:06 PM CDT up reply actions

The Great Munsoni
2- 2 count.  Good curveball, he stays alive fouling it off to the right.

Strikes out on a curveball  away and low.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Everett
swings at a 3 - 0 pitch and grounds it to short.

I'm pretty sure that the Pirats were willing to concede a walk there if we'd been willing to accept it.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Same here
When we got to two balls, I knew Maholm would go 3-0 and then toss two down the middle to see if Everett would bite.

Bah.  That would have been nice to start off with Taveras next inning.

by saylinara on May 27, 2006 7:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom of the Fourth
Castillo sharply bounced to Ensberg who makes a quality pick.

Throws on to Lamb, one away.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:12 PM CDT reply actions

Doumit
Pops it straight up, and Munson didn't pick it up, so Wandy started charging in.

Fortunately it didn't come to that, as Munson found it and squeezed his large catchers glove around it.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Maholm
Wandy goes to 3 - 0 and you cringe.

But Maholm then looks at a fastball strike and grounds the 3-1 pitch to Everett.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions

Top of the Fifth
Wandy

Still love the switch-hitting charade.

He grounds it to third.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:18 PM CDT reply actions

Taveras
Tries the bunt, Sanchez had been in and had a shot to gett Willy but he dropped the ball.

I'd imagine that's a hit.

Either way, it's a baserunner.  Nice work Willy.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Biggio
A third walk here would be nice.

Maholm looks to be cooperating as he goes 2- 0, then 3 - 0.

Don't fuck it up, Craig.

Fastball takes the count to 3 - 1.

Curveball outside and Craig did walk.

gotta see the last time Biggio walked three times in a game.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Burke
First pitch is a curve ball high and away

Second pitch is a fastball high and away.

Before the third pitch can be unfurled, the Pirates' walking coach comes out to pay a visit.

Fastball down in the zone is slapped into center, but Willy wasn't sure that McLouth couldn't get to it.

Pirates guys are bitching a little bit, but I'm OK with the caution, considering it's Morgan coming up.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Ensberg
batting with the bases loaded, he skies to center.  Taveras scores, other runners do not advance.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Lamb
with one out and two men on.

Similar base hit to Burke's scores Biggio.

Looked like a good curve ball.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Wilson
with men on the corners, and Wilson sneaks one through, Burke scores, and the Astros take the lead.

Lamb takes second

3 - 2 Astros.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Right.
"You can live with the strikeouts if he provides the  . . ." oh never mind.

Eric M
Lines it down the line and Craig Wilson makes a desperate stab at it, valiant, beautiful and doomed to failure.

The RBI double drives in Lamb.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Everett
oh yeah, Wilson to third.

Everett is intentionally walked to load the bases.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Wandy
As we bat around.

He strikes out leaves 'em loaded.

But a nice inning ignited by the Willy T bunt.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I love Munson as our backup catcher
They definitely made the right choice out of ST.

WHY!  Juan De is back, ladies and gents.

by saylinara on May 27, 2006 7:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Sanchez
singles to right and I thought that may stay up.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Bay
Homers.

Seems like our starters do their worst pitching when given the lead, huh?

Bucs up 5 - 4.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Bautista
GIDP, and unlike Taylor Wandy manages to limit the damage after he screws up.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:42 PM CDT up reply actions

We still would be ahead
if the defense had pulled it's collective head out of it's collective ass in the first.

by saylinara on May 27, 2006 7:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Top of the Sixth
Willy T leadoff double and bottle that shit so we can pull it out when we need to this year.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:47 PM CDT reply actions

Biggio
Oh yeah, Matt Capps pitching.  Biggio sngles off someone's glove, and Taveras scores.

Better than packing it in, certainly.

Game tied, 5 - 5.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Burke
goes to 3 - 1, then a full count as he swings through a fastball.

Runner goes as Burke pops it behind the plate.  Doumit snares it as Biggio retreats.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Ensberg
has put the wood on the ball tonight, so a little expectation of something good happening here may not entirely be out of place.

Just goes to show you, Ensberg pops it up to the pitchers mound.  Pirates rent' sure what's going on, but eventually Sanchez glides into the picture and gloves it.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Lamb
ingle to center off John Grabow, Biggio takes second.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions

If we lose this one
I think this will be the most heartbreaking.  We can't fight this hard for a win and not get it.

by saylinara on May 27, 2006 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom of the Sixth
Castillo lifts it left-center, Taveras grabs it as Burke curls away.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 7:58 PM CDT reply actions

Doumit
3 balls no strikes.

Fastball catches the top of the zone.

Fouled back behind the plate, for a full count.

Doubles down the third base line.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Mike Edwards
pinch-hitting for Grabow.

Wandy walks him.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions

McLouth
with men on first and second and one out.

McLouth swings at a 3 - 1 fastball, and McLouth turns on it grounding it to Lamb, who turns and fires to second.  The throw back is late.

Runners on the corners two out.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Jack Wilson
will face , as Wandy has been removed in a double switch.  OP(P) comes in for Preston, and Springer will face the Pirates shortstop.

Wilson pops out to Lamb

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Top of the Seventh
Salomon Torres to face Munson.

Munson hits a nubber that Wilson has to seriusly charge, he barehands it and throws on (maybe) beating Munson by a half a step.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:15 PM CDT reply actions

Bottom of the Seventh
Springer still in facing Sanchez and Bay of course on deck.

He grounds out to Craig.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:21 PM CDT reply actions

Bautista
strikes out after what seemed like a long, drawn out at bat.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Top of the Eighth
Roberto Hernandez pitching.

Taveras leads off another inning.

It was 2 - 0 now it's 2 - 2.

Willy strikes out on a high fastball.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:30 PM CDT reply actions

Biggio
has not yet failed to reach base tonight.

0 - 2 after he swings at a pitch iu the dirt.

Hernandez tries to get him on one outside and low, but Craig was able to check his swing.

Another ball evens the count.

High fastbll, and again Craig checked his swing.

3- 2.  Inside, and that's Biggio's fourth walk.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Burke
HBP as an inside pitch nicks his jersey.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Haha is Garner still going crazy down in the
dugout.  You could hear him yelling through the radio.  It was hilarious.

by saylinara on May 27, 2006 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions

They showed a Split Screen Cutin
you know like yopu used to se for stolen bases.

On one half Garner barking loud, on the other the umpire ignoring him.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Well there he goes
Garner is a fool, but a lovable one.

Well, the Astros have never lost for Cecil.  Let's hope that streak continues.

by saylinara on May 27, 2006 8:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Ensberg
Number 18 would go down good right now.

Fouled off to the left.

58 foot curveball blocked by Doumit.

Slider low and away.  Ensberg, not being Biggio, did not offer.

Low and in front of the plate.  3 - 1.

Ensberg walks.

Bases jucied for Mikey Lamb.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Lamb
flies to Bay who drops the ball.

Biggo scores, then Burke comes around, and it's a big fuckarow at the plate.

Doumit had the plate blocked but Burke slid around him.

Doumit made a big show of showing the ump that Burke did not knock the ball out of his hands.

But it doesn't look like he ever tagged Burke.

Burke is called out, and Garner comes out to argue.

They don't change the call and Garner is tossed.

Runners do advance.

Berkman
pinch-hitting Why?  as he is intentionally walked.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions

To test his knee, I guess
They say he can bat just fine, but it's harder to run right now.  I guess they wanted the homerun to pad the score so he wouldn't have to really run.

by saylinara on May 27, 2006 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions

They Had
to know he'd be walked.  And then you've got the gimpy legs on the paths.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Or just in case they go extra innings
He's already been used so we don't have to worry about running him out there.  I really don't know, although I'm sure there's some logic behind it.

by saylinara on May 27, 2006 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Munson
with the bases loaded and two outs.

Munson grounds to Wilson.

It's 6 - 5 Astros, it SHOULD be 7 - 5, and it COULD have been more.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions

As long as we're winning
and as long as Wheeler doesn't mess this up, 6-5 us is JUST fine.

Bottom of the Eighth
Oh Look!  An endgame situation, let's ee how well the bullpen can put this one to bed.

Wheeler to face Castillo.

he grounds to third after another long drawn out at bat.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:50 PM CDT reply actions

Doumit
that double he had against Wandywas only his second hit as a lefty  I see; he's now 2 for 12 as a lefty.

Fastball is lifted to center and Willy tracks it down

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:51 PM CDT up reply actions

No. Absouletely not. I refuse to believe this
shit.  I hate the damn bullpen and I hate the damn umpires.

Burnitz
batting for Roberto Hernandez

Curve ball drops in.

Fastball fouled back.

One sails on Russ.

1 - 2.  Jeromy stays alive on a ball he was able to nub foul.

Burnitz homers.

Well we wondered whether the bullpen could hold it, and there's your answer.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 8:54 PM CDT up reply actions

McLouth
goes to 3 - 0 as Wheeler is al flummoxed after gacking up the led.

Top of the Ninth
Mike Gonzalez to face Everett

Gonzlez falls behind 2 - 0 .  OK Adam don't give anything away this time please.

He fouls out on a 2 - 1 pitch to Craig Wilson.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 9:02 PM CDT reply actions

Lane
pinch-hitting for Palmeiro.

I am rooting for you here, sir, at the least please do not have a stupid at bat.

A ball and a foul evens the count.

The Pirates feed shows us Lidge preparing in the pen and we now know Bay will bat in the bottom of the inning.

It's now 2- 2 between Gonzo (yes! they just called him that) and Lane.

Lane gives it a ride to right, but Bautista is able to snare it, and short of the warning track.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 9:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Willy T
quickly 0 - 2, and you gotta say at least the Pirates pitchers want to move the game along.

Count evens at  2 - 2.

Willy strikes out on a breaking ball.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Bottom of the Ninth
It's Lidge vs. Sanchez Bay and Wilson, what passes for the heart of the Pirates order, and I gotta say I suspect he will fail.

I know that's a horrible thing to say, but it just kind of gauges where I stand as a fan and with the creative approaches to losing we've seen lately.

But no!  scratch the elegy.  Wheeler stays in, and I guess it's because it's not a save situation, and because they'd rather use a guy who's already given up a homer against Burnitz to face Bay.

Freddy Sanchez

2 balls and a strike, goes to 2 - 2 with a foul off to the right

Nice pitch just at the corner and Sanchez K's looking.

by rastronomicals on May 27, 2006 9:12 PM CDT reply actions

by saylinara on May 27, 2006 11:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Trying to Fgure Out That Part
Ausmus was the last position player when he came to hit for Qualls with 2 out in the 12th.

Qualls was in the three-slot and Munson was in the seven-slot.

I think the only way to do what you're saying is to have Qualls hit for himself and run the double switch at the start of the next inning, if you didn't want to use Qualls for three innings, or suck it up and use Chadley for three.

Either way you'd have to have Qualls hit for himself, and that's giving it up on the front side.

by rastronomicals on May 28, 2006 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions

See I would have taken that risk
because we knew Lidge still needed to come in and if he had Ausmus, probably could have gone a third inning if he batted for himself.  Neither situation was favorable, but considering that the last play was made to a very very very tired catcher, it would have been a decent risk.

by saylinara on May 28, 2006 1:58 AM CDT up reply actions

What killed the team
was all the double switches, especially in situations that didn't really warrant it.  IIRC, there was a double switch or two in the first 9 innings.

Sorry for all the posts in a row
but I just have one more thing to add.

Looking over Gameday, something that I didn't really truly fathom during the game, is why would you put the pitchers spot in front of Ensberg???  I kept wondering why he kept leading off every inning and duh.

Another thing that hindered us was our starting lineup tonight.  Because Burke was in the lineup, there wasn't a lot of shuffling that could be done.

Third thing, and last, I swear.  Garner needs to make serious on his jokes about Bruntlett making a good catcher.  I still stand firm that this game could have been won, or at least that run prevented, if we had a fresher catcher (Also, a less stupid Gallo, but I digress).  I couldn't see it myself, but after every play after about the 15th, the radio announcers kept saying how slowly Munson was moving and how his leg movements were sort of disorienting.

You know, it would have least been honorable
with a homerun or something.

But noooo.  Gallo just had to decide to hand them the game.  On a silver platter.  Words cannot describe how pissed I am at him.  Now that we have a semi-decent lefty in Miller can we send you back to class A?  Please.

Thank You saylinara
your comments are always thoughtful, and thanks to any and all simply reading along.

Any sane person would have gone to bed hours ago, or gone drinking, or whatever, but if you were here, you definitely deserve the shout-out.
