Astros MiLB Recap: Games of July 3, 2014

The Hooks won their second in a row against Springfield. Ronnie Mitchell homered twice in a Bandits win. And everyone else lost. Here's your MiLB Recap for the pre-holiday.

While you're getting ready for an all-American cookout or a war movie marathon for July 4, take a moment to see how the Astros minor league clubs performed on Thursday night. It wasn't all pretty, but the night had its moments. Here we go:

AAA: Redhawks lose to Colorado Springs, 6-2

The Sky Sox aimed to win a three game series against OKC at Security Service Field on Thursday night, and win they did. OKC lost the last game of this series, 6-2.

Jake Buchanan's night got off to a rough start as the Sky Sox put two runs on the board in the first inning. While he recovered to pitch four scoreless innings thereafter, Colorado Springs picked up two more runs in the sixth. His line for tonight reads a lot like his last five appearances. Its...meh. Bobby Doran came on in the bottom of the seventh, and promptly gave up the Sky Sox last two runs.

The Redhawks only managed to muster 2 runs in the game, and both of those came in the third off of journeyman Brett Tomko. Jonathan Villar and Marc Krauss both picked up RBIs on the night. Outside of their efforts, OKC managed 5 hits including a double.

That wasn't enough to make the Sky Sox sweat, and the Redhawks head back to OKC with a third straight loss on their minds. They'll kick off a set against the Iowa Cubs Friday night at Bricktown Ballpark.

  • Robbie Grossman, CF: 1-3, R, 2B

  • Jonathan Villar, SS: 2-4, RBI

  • Marc Krauss, DH: 1-4, RBI

  • Austin Wates, RF: 2-4

  • Jake Buchanan, P (L, 6-5): 6.0 IP, 7H, 4R, 4ER, 4BB, K

  • Bobby Doran, P: 2.0 IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 2K

AA: Corpus Christi hooks Springfield, 4-2

The Hooks earned their second victory in a row against Springfield, winning 4-2.

In the last two recaps I've written about the Hooks I've covered a Jordan Jankowski loss. I'm happy to report that I've got different news this time around. Jankowski earned his second win of the season, giving up two runs on five hits including a dinger over five innings. Mike Hauschild and Travis Ballew cleaned up nicely to hold a two-run lead in place.

On the offensive end, the Hooks were led by Jonathan Meyer's two RBIs. Andrew Aplin and Telvin Nash added RBIs of their own.

If you'll be in the Corpus Christi area for July 4, be sure to bring your brooms out to Whataburger Field to cheer the Hooks towards a sweep of Springfield on Friday evening.

  • Andrew Aplin, RF: 1-4, RBI

  • Jonathan Meyer, 3B: 1-4, 2RBI

  • Jiovanni Mier, SS: 1-3, R, 2B

  • Telvin Nash, DH: 1-2, RBI

  • Jordan Jankowski, P (W, 2-3): 5.0 IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, BB, K, HR

  • Mike Hauschild, P (H, 1): 3.0 IP, 3BB, 2K

  • Travis Ballew, P (S, 4): 1.0 IP

A+: JetHawks defeated by Stockton, 5-1

Lancaster couldn't seem to find their offense tonight on the road against Stockton, and lost 5-1.

Though the JetHawks gathered nine hits, they didn't have much to show for it. Lancaster's sole run came in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Jordan Scott.

Josh Hader was beaten up by Stockton over four innings, giving up four runs on eight hits. He did pick up five strikeouts on the night. Thursday night became Hader's first loss on the season. The Ports would go on to add another run off of reliever Zach Morton.

Lancaster looks to rebound against Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night at home.

  • Jordan Scott, LF: 2-5, RBI

  • Chan Moon, SS: 1-4

  • Rio Ruiz, 3B: 2-4

  • Danry Vasquez, DH: 2-4, R

  • Josh Hader, P (L, 7-1): 4.0 IP, 8H, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 5K

  • Zach Morton, P: 2.2 IP, 4H, R, ER, BB

A-: Mitchell homers twice in Bandits' win

Quad Cities celebrated the eve of July 4th with some fireworks courtesy of Ronnie Mitchell. He blasted a pair of home runs in the Bandits' 6-3 win over Beloit. The win wrapped up a three game road sweep of the Snappers.

Starter Kevin Comer picked up his first win of the season for the Bandits, giving up two runs on four hits over five innings. His start was followed by a one-run, three-hit effort from Edison Frias and a tidy door-closing by Andrew Walter.

While the big offensive story of the night was Mitchell's bombs and 3 RBIs, Chase McDonald also contributed an RBI and two hits.

The Bandits hope to keep the streak alive at home on Friday night against Wisconsin.

  • Marc Wik, 3B: 1-4, R, 2B

  • Chase McDonald, 1B: 2-4, R, RBI

  • Ronnie Mitchell, RF: 2-4, 2R, 2HR, 3RBI

  • Jose Fernandez, 2B: 1-3, 2R, BB

  • Dayne Parker, SS: 2-4

  • Kevin Comer, P (W, 1-1): 5.0 IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, BB, K

  • Edison Frias, P: 3.0 IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, BB, 3K

  • Andrew Walter (S, 7): 1.0 IP, K
